I recently took the 403 out of my 79 Trans Am to have it rebuilt. Since the engine is out of the car, I decided now is a good time to replace the motor mounts. The problem is getting the old ones out. The bolts for the motor mounts are screwed into nuts below the crossmember, right? How do I access these nuts? Right now I don't see any way to reach the nuts. So any advice on getting the mounts out is appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

There are access holes under the crossmember to access the nuts. I used a swivel head adapter for the socket with an extension to reach the bolts, had someone hold a box wrench on the bolt head. To put back in i used a small piece of tape to hold the nut in the socket to keep it at the top of the socket and keep from falling out. It was a real pain but a good light comes in handy to watch what the socket is doing. Have fun.

If you plan on rebuilding the suspension then you can get at em with the lower control arms removed.

Otherwise go with Yankee

I used a swivel as well but on some you can stick your hand in there with a wrench and let it lock against the metal once you start undoing the nuts...make sure not to have your fingers in b/t the wrench and the metal... :0 I also got new poly bushings for the mounts. They come with thick plastic tie straps . You have to drill the old 2 plates apart, clean em and paint em (if ya want) and then install the 2 plates with the poly piece b/t em using a vice, then zip tie em together to facilitate ease of installing. Make sure you get em synched down pretty good so your bolts don't have to be a mile long. When I reinstalled them I just left the plastic straps there in case I ever needed to remove em again in...

Here's 2 pics of em installed...I wish I would have taken step by step pics but its pretty straight forward to do em.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I figured I was going to just have to use a few extensions and it was going to be a little tricky. But wanted to make certain I wasn't missing something obvious.

Thought about using poly mounts too but I didn't think I was going to be producing enough power to need them.

Thanks,
Steve

Where did you get the poly motor mounts? I think energy suspension makes them, but only chevy ones.

I've been looking for poly engine mounts for my 73 455. If you know of any available, please let me know.
