can someone tell me the worth of a 67 or 68 428. Do all 67&68"S have 4 bolt mains? Are there different valve sizes in these two years?????This engine is tired and needs rebuilding.
Thanks for your help

I believe all 1967 428's were 4 bolt main.
I think possibly all 1968 were too.
1969 weren't though.Mainly just the 4 bbls.

As I was told (more or less) when I asked the same question; "That 428 isn't worth anything. Why don't you give me the guys address and I'll pick it up and take it to the recyclers for him."
Really, I beleive all '67 and '68 428s are bolt and the '69s with big valve heads are 4 bolt. The small valve '69s are drilled for 4 but have 2 bolt caps.
For price reference I got my good running, complete, virgin '69 YH 428 delivered to my house with an engine stand for $500, but I think that was a pretty good deal!

That should read "'67 and '68 are 4 bolt". I should proof read before I hit "post", not after!

67 and 68 will most likely have 4 bolt main caps, 670 or 16 heads which will up their value from the 69/46 head 428. $650 in my opinion would not be out of line for a virgin, verifyable, rebuildable core.
$500 for the 69's.

I have seen both 2 & 4 bolt main 68/69 428’s, I have only seen a few 67 428’s and all of them were 4 bolt.

with out questions there can be no answers

All 68 & 69 428s were drilled & taped for 4 bolt mains.
Most were only equipped w/ 2 bolt caps, though.
I'm not sure about the 67s?
Adding a set of billet caps to these is very reasonable.
67s & prior Ponchos have a different valve angle than 68 & later engines.
There is something about the timing cover/water pump arraingements as well, I believe the 67s & earlier were of one design, the 68 a different, and 69 & later was different again. I'm not exactly sure what the differences are.
Someone else got the scoop on this?

I paid $450 for my 68 4-bolt block but it came with a set of new pistons as well. The second 428 I bought cost me $75 and it was a two bolt 1969

Nothing cuts like a Bridgeport. Still made in the USA!

I got my 69 428 from Bigunde a couple of years ago $600.00 including the shipping charges.
that's from Florida to Oregon.
My motor is only a 2 bolt main motor. But before the rod bearing went south ( no more clevitte 77 bearings for me), it revved to the moon.

I've twisted my motor as high as 6,000 rpm, with out it ever missing a beat.
As soon as I can get the crank checked out to insure it's still good.
I'll be rebuilding the motor, and it'll be even meaner then it was before.
And my 69 Firebird was an animal for power with this motor.

I was given my 428. Small valve, two bolt main, four-barrel. Still haven't done anything with it, but it makes me happy just to know it's there!

I have a 69 XF code 4 bolt block with 4 bolt caps and #62 heads hiding in the garage..
I was going to put it in the 73 but now I'm going with a 455 block..
I'm sure it'll find a good home.
