Well I went to break in the cam today and try to locate the exhaust leak. Turns out the leak was the exhaust crossover leaking. I need to yank the intake and replace the gasket there. Is there a prefered gasket for these old 400's or just the standard felpro stuff?

Thanks,
-harry

To break in a cam you run the car at 2000 RPM with no load on it for 15 minutes or until the engine comes up to temp, whichever takes longer. Then drain and replace the oil and filter.

Missed the why part. The reason is to allow the lifters to "seat" against the cam. I cannot give you the mechanics of why you use 2000 RPM, but it is the speed I was taught. Seating the lifters to the cam is important to prolong cam life and is one of the reasons you never switch lifters from one hole to the next or reuse lifters with a cam change.

Hope this helps,
-harry

Ed,

Just found this link to the Crane Cam web site. Gives a good explaination of the How and Why.

Make sure you get the right intake gasket for the year of the heads you're using.

John,

That turned out to be the problem, they used the wrong gaskets. Correct, new ones are in and the motor runs like a top.
