Firebird Man here's that picture you want. I'm in the proccess of replacing mine at the factory seams. It's got this weird twisted metal strip on each end where it connects to the back of the quarter. I'm not sure I'll ever get it back in the way it came out. I think from drilling spotwelds and chiseling it might be distorted.

Poncho Mike you're right theres four (each unique) strips, Two on each side. Essentially they connect the tail panel to the quarter.

That picture is the strip on the right upper side around the outside of the taillight and under the lip of the quarter panel. I'm missing the lower right strip. Both left side peices are still on the left quarter.

) However, what are the two lower ones you mean? Can you show a pic? Are these just the pieces that connect to the lower valance area?

Not a very good pic but here it is. Pete they are the smaller strips that connect lower valance to the lower rear of the quarter. Definitely the lowers are less complicated than the uppers.

thanks!! yeah, they are the ones I thought. yes, trhey are easy to cut out and make. I had to make one for my taillight panel.

How did you make them. Start w ith a rectangle strip and start fitting?

What do you think about using structural adhesive in this area? It seems tough to try to weld it back in and much easier to glue it? No?

I'm old school and weld everything. There is certainly a place for the adhesives; no doubt. However, I do not think an area like this is one of them, IMO. I would rather know I had it welded here. True, the welding will make it more porne to rusting unless you coat it real well afterwards. I made one by tracing a pattern from the good side and flipping it over

) Then I cut it out using 20 gauge steel.

If you would like, I have made a template for the lower rear valence panel for my bird. Give me an E-mail if interested. You will just have to find a piece of metal and a box and pan break to put the lower angle on it.

I looked at your site quite a bit. It was cool to see the progression of your work. Did you do a lot of the bodywork or did you have help? I wish I was that talented!!

Wasn't that Firebird on www.carsinbarns.com at one time. I remember coming across a Firebird in a barn covered in bird poop. I'm pretty sure yours is the same one. Kudos to you man for bringing it back.

How radical is that 455 gonna be (idle,etc...) producing that kind of hp?

Hey guys, sorry for the delay in the response. I have never done this before in my life. This is my first real car. All that I have learned is from these message boards and some magazines.

As far as the engine goes, that dyno graph is from Desktop dyno. Check the site, there is a video of it running in my driveway.

I just insytalled my repaired taillight panel on my 70/79 Firebird. The panel was great, the repr quarters were not. I have spent about 10 hours installing the panel. The majority of the time was creating quarter panel edges that would mate up with the taillight panel. I used repr lower quarter pieces to turn the 79 quarters into 1070 ones. Those of you who have used the repro stuff know that the rear wrap around area is not exact. If you use a reepro piece you must use the existing piece from your old quarter, where the taillight panel attaches. But I did not have this as my parts cars, that are 70s, had extreme rust in that area. I had to fabricate the area I am referring to. many many hours with a MIG, oxy-acet, whizzer, snips etc. But, it is installed!! I will get pics.
