I have a set of heads for an engine I am putting together and I would like to have them put on a flow bench. I just called my local shop and was told they charge $60 for the first cylinder and $45 for each additional one. That works out to $375. Are they trying to rape me or is that about the going rate?

Cost me $100 at a local shop. I think they randomly selected the ports.

Its not the inventing the computer Just search a bit, then you do it on a junk head, then do it on the main heads , it works |

"flowing heads" = flow evaluation done on a flow bench
bit difficult to do it your self without a $4000 flowbench lots of folks perform do it yourself grinding in the ports, some do very well, others end up with problems. but its almost whistling in the dark unless its well researched, practised, and then have a couple of your self improved ports evaluated by an expert on a bench. Conciousness, that annoying interval of time between naps.

You are right about the flow bench, but after a search you can realise the weak points of your heads or flow killer points, then solve that problem. Infact Im experienced on the Chevy engines/heads Im here for learning pontiacs to do my 69 lemans. I have to learn about thepontiac heads and port designs.... I did my 461 camel humps my self by dremel motor and couple set of sand rolls after awhile you can become familiar with it. Off course its not a proffesional job NASCAR techs. do but its fun to do by yourself.
Unfortunatelly since you dont have a flowbench your only test device is your car It worked on my Z28 verry well. If you look for a professional job Im sure that cost will be higher. |
