I have a poncho 400. what's the easiest way to get 500 hp. I also need to know where I can get new rods to handle this! The motor is .40 over already. I DON'T WANT A 455 CRANK. I think I can get more hp out off the 400 safely without breakage. Torque won't be as good but poncho engines have torque to spare.

Spray it. I'm serious, that is the easiest and most cost effective way to reach 500hp. Adding steel rods is wise, and they are available from various sources such as PPR, Butler, KRE, etc..

if you dont like what Les said you will have to invest serious dollars. You will need a lot of head flo,a large cam, good rods and pistons, and it would not be real kind as a street motor.Tom

I have eldebrock heads. What would be a good cam intake combination for max horsepower, over 2500 rpm?

Warped,

I have been thinking about a similar combo, as a way to use my 400 crank instead of buying the Eagle 4.25 incher. (Your crank is an offset ground 3.75" correct?)

Did you do a whole lot of deck grinding and use off the shelf 455 pistons; or did you order custom pistons (pin height) to achieve your zero deck?

Nice website by the way!

John

Warped,
You list on your site that your 72cc E-heads have 77cc's. What work did you do to get 5 more cc's from the e-heads? Whats the cost to do that. Or did I read it wrong?

Ron

yes John, we off set ground the crank .040”

We used a custom ROSS piston; basically a 455+.030 piston but used the .990 wristpin to match the 6.80” BBC rods small end. If I remember right we had to cut the deck about .040”. The intake had to be cut too And glad you like the site

Ron you read right, they actually cam that way from Butler in 1997. I didn’t eve pay attention to them until I sold them to a friend. He had taken them to a shop to check them out and they told him they were 77cc. I have since seen chamber laid (sp?) back to get as much as 5-7cc. I would need to double check with Matt but I think it was $75-$100 to do this.

BTW, I just recently pulled this short block out of the corner of my garage and I am using a few different parts. This will be going into my 1985 Grand Prix project. If you would like to check it out here is a link.

Our street 400 has a solid cam thats 246-254 duration @ .050 and .575-594 lift with 1.65 rockers. It runs mid 11s and it gets driven everywhere (we were going to drive it to Norwalk 650 miles one way but gas prices stop us). Since you have e-heads just get a RPM intake and a decent cam and you will be there. It seems a lot of people think that it takes alot to get 500hp out of a 400. I dont think thats true at all, it just will idle a little rougher than a 455 with 500hp but just as easy to do.

Nice, warped. I love seeing Pontiac powered G-bodies. And no, the 301 doesn't count.
