Can someone help me identify the engine in a 69 that I just bought? The casting id is YE. Casting numbers on the front of the block are D738797. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Try Here.

Might need the date code and the block code to know for sure.

From my pontiac service manual..

YE is the code for 350, 265 HP, Automatic, 9.2:1 compression ratio 9777254 cam, 1111942 dist, HD Valve springs small valve cylinder heads.

My guess would be that your heads are 47. I have an XB block in mine, with the same specs.

The block code does not make sense.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">D738797 </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I show it to be casting 9790079

The block casting number is behind cylinder 8 on the passenger side.

The date code for the block should be near the Distributor mounting pad. You will probably have t remove the distributor to read it.

It is a letter (Month, A = January) followed by the day (1 to 31) and year (0-9)

sounds to me like you have a 68-69 400 assuming the number is 9790071 not 9790079. I have the 9790071 YE code in my FB. Date coded for 68
