The best runs have been shifting at 5600rpm's. Even so, for bracket racing I shift at 5000rpm's, no need to grind up the engine and the car still runs well into the 11's with the lower shift points. It also leaves me a bit of room if I happen to slip just a bit on the launch. I can buzz the engine a bit harder and make up the ET in a close race.....Cliff

There have been plenty of discussions regarding fuel starvation which seem to incorporate all kinds of mechanical/electric pump combinations, changes in fuel line sizes and carb changes. In the end, sumping the tank fixes the problem.
Just wondering...before considering anything else, should one try sumping the tank and sticking with the factory fuel lines and high volume mechnical pump. Is that going to provide enough fuel for 11 to 12 second quarter mile potential? Mike J |

Good question, but I'm not sure if sumping the tank alone would work with some of the restrictive stock fuel lines I've seen? It still makes sense to let the hard launch situation force feed a rear mounted electric pump, then push the fuel forward to the regulator/carburetor.
Knowing what I know now, I would sump the tank first if I had a vehicle with fuel delivery issues on hard runs. No matter what I did to my fuel system AFTER the stock pick-up, it made very little difference. I had even removed the sock from the pick-up and modified it a bit further back in the tank, didn't work.....Cliff

Guy, I'd run the hanger as delivered and rods around .040-.041" to start out, only lean it up if needed.
Rich, did you get the other engine installed yet? You gonna change that 10.74 to a 12.74? It's gonna be quite a change this year having to chase your RACE car with my "daily driver".....LOL....Cliff

Rich, it'll be interesting to see what happens to your race car taking over 200 hp out of the engine? You'll be able to eat a couple of Big Mac's before you get to the end of the track. If you try real hard you'll be able to woof down an order of fries with em....lol....Cliff

Hey
You like that eh? Let me tell ya 1st off that up here in Maine its either Cheebie or John Deere powered. So I'm run'n this here 31 Ford rat rod with the Poncho power... get'n sick of "what size Chevy is that?" Anyway what I did waz to go poke'n around in the local boneyard (not much to do up here either) Found a couple of mid 80s Pontiacs, carefully took the emblems off, (outside body emblems) Get rid of all the old "stickem" on the back, see your buddy at the body shop an get some new "stickem", put on back of emblem an put um where ya want, razor blade off x-cess and thats that.. Looks pretty good.. Now folks ask "what size Pontiac?". Gives me a better feel'n Pontiac Slim |

A great holley will not run properly with a poor fuel system. I have seen a couple of engine combinations where the dual float bowl 4 barrel carb would not keep up at 1100 ft out. Going to a three carb deal (one extra float bowl) "fixed" the marginal fuel system issue. Better to do the fuel system right and run the single Q-Jet or Holley in most cases. Brady and others have picked up 3 tenths on quick (10 second or better) cars with the right fuel system/ tank mods/ fuel cell. Tom V.

I am not going to the CC Nat's so I will not be doing the dyno run. But I do run a Q-jet, and I will be running the POCI event in Atlanta next week. Its the 1/4 mile dyno, best one in my opinion. I do agree with you on the visual apperance of a Q-jet that runs the numbers... </div></BLOCKQUOTE> What fuel system do you use to supply your Q-Jet?
