I put a 76 400 in my t/a. It came from a cat the mileage on the car said 35000 I'm taking that at a 135000 as the car was a rust bucket but the motor was clean so I pull it a part and it was clean on the inside to so I do the what I was planning new oil pump cam gaskets ect..put it back together drop her in she runs like a watch. So I'm guessing that the motor was rebuilt at one time and I would like to know what kind of piston should of came in this motor be it flat or other

Your '76 400 came with cast flat-top pistons that featured a large chamfer or bevel around the outer circumference at the top.
The chamfer was there to help further lower the compression, these engines had only a 7.6:1 compression ratio.

thanks b-man I knew that the motor had the 7:6:1 compression but I thought that the piston might have eyebrows in them to get it down
