Thompson (Kuhnle) Closing for 2024
https://www.sickthemagazine.com/news...re-in-jeopardy
Another track possibly closing. The owners own a trucking company and purchased the track 2 years ago. They poured money into everything but the track surface including building an uphill semi truck drag strip? I didn’t know that was a thing. The truck racing will go on this year but no cars/bikes unless someone leases the track for the year. Doesn’t look good.

It sucks big time that there’s no racing this year. I do two gasser events every year at this track and have a blast. Definitely has that old nostalgic 1/4 mile feel to it. Hopefully someone comes along and saves it.
Had my best ever ET and 60’ there last year, 10.29@126, 1.36

That is too bad.
I've had a win or two there myself (NMCA). K

Here in Houston our big Baytown track closed last year. Property sold to build a giant distribution center. Knocked down everything from the track but still have not built anything. San Antonio closed 2-3 years ago. Sealy was bought by Hennessey where he built his shop to build high end cars, we had a couple of small muscle car club events there 5 years ago right as he shut it down.
Dallas still has the Motorplex in Ennis and a new 1/8 track XMP that has a lot of events! Nice pit area nice track. But still 4.5-5 hours away. A 10 hour round trip kind of makes a day event kind of long! The young guy that did the Baytown prep work has started with an older track and improved it and got NHRA approval for 1./4 mile now near Lufkin but 3 hours away.

Property value and high property taxes are killing the tracks. Ours left the chat in 2018. Nothing on the horizon for a replacement.

A percentage of this can be laid at the feet of the Hoonigan crowd. The professional video promotion of this activity has made it too attractive to many of the young folks who might have been lured into drag racing.
Let's face it from the prospective of a teenager or 20 something with a 300 hp vehicle why would you pay someone to get 3 to 4 runs down a track after being subjected to a myriad of rules that make no sense to them? When for them the alternative is to meet up with 30 or 50 other cars to blast around town way above the speed limit and then spend 20 minutes making donuts in the middle of the highway, or in front of a mall, or city hall. And then do it all again in 3 or 4 different places all in the same night. All without anybody interfering with their showing off for the opposite sex or charging an entry fee. I know this happens at least twice a week here during the dry weather as I can hear them beating on their cars from my house. One thing I never seem to hear is any response from law enforcement.

I went to a test and tune the week after and the pits were still a mess, asphalt torn up from pit burnouts.
