Unique LSR motor
They hold a record using a flat head Dodge four. Now they are going after a new record using a Pontiac top end on their Dodge motor.

My guess is that it’s a 71 to 73 Dodge 1.5 L L4.
They start life at ( 3.389” x 2.531” ) ”91.4 CID, so I wonder what it is now and would also love to know how far off the Pontiac head bolt pattern is! With only a 3.389” bore size in stock form they must have welded up the chambers big time to reduce the valve size!

No other motorsport is as diverse (goofy?) as landspeed.

Ron Main, the last I heard, still holds the record for the Flat Head 4 cylinder engine (believe it is a 1946 engine) that has traveled the salt to over 300 mph in a streamliner. But have not followed that class in the last few years.
http://flatfire.com/ Block: Ford 1946 59a V-8 Bore: 3.307 Stroke 4.375 I WAS PART OF THE TEAM THAT WAS AT BONNEVILLE IN 2001 WHEN THEY SET THAT RECORD, (Over 300 mph), was cool hanging out with the Landy brothers and Bruce Crower. RIP Gentlemen. Tom V.

And how does this info about the Ford relate to this Pontiac headed Dodge other then they both run or ran on the flats?

"4 cylinder with modified heads". So then you have the record for that class and say that the Ron Main streamliner held that record from 2001. So then you have to decide if you are going to build another streamliner or go into a different class of race chassis that has a different record. Building a streamliner that works on the salt, means that you have to go thru being qualified on the 200 mph 3 mile course FIRST. Then if you have enough runs to show that you can (and the vehicle can) handle 200 mph then you can try to run in the 200 to 300 mph class to set a record. If you are just out there to have fun you still have to prove that you are safe driving in a given class to the Tech people. Both run on the salt flats means you know nothing about how the racing works. Good beginner question though. Tom V.

I answered that question George. Read the previous post.

Many classes at Bonneville George. That Dodge set the record in VF4/BFMR, which is not a streamliner class.
Vintage Flathead 4 / Blown Fuel Modified Roadster. By adding the Pontiac OHV head (actually 2 heads) their class would change to V4/BFMR. Like Jack said, “ no Motorsport is as diverse”!

Obviously misterp266, you actually know something about the Bonneville Salt Flats and the different classes. The first year I was there I was pitted next to Richard Holdener and his girlfriend (at the time, now wife), and Ron Main's streamliner pit crew. I was a member of Ron's team
as were Bruce Crower and the Landy brothers. Banks and Giesler were a few hundred feet away as was Al Teague who at the time was the fastest guy on the salt if you did not count the jet powered chassis that held a record there. The Pontiac Trans Am with the BB Chevy engine and twin turbos (driven by Don Stringfellow and owned by Banks) was a bit farther away. Glad you have knowledge of the classes and the racing at the salt. Tom V.

I think it’s more people who like a challenge and have the ability to think outside of the box. They aren’t paying someone else to build them a motor, they are doing it on their own. Similar to Jack deciding to build a DOHC M/T Hemi four cylinder motor for his LSR car.
In a world of full of boring LS motors, it’s good to see what people with vision can produce. True hot rodding.

Speaking of money...
In 1985 when I first built the M/T hemi V8 I needed to make my own copper head gaskets. But in recent years I can get them custom-made by SCE. I just bought one gasket and a spare for the hemi-four... $230! It may be time to get that sheet of .022" copper out from the rafters and dust off the old punches.
