According to NAPA Online, the part numbers of the steering box for both cars is the same.

Check to see if turning radius is the same.

Actually, the turning radius will not change, that is dictated by the stops between the lower a-arm and the spindle. What can be different between the two steering boxes is the number of turns lock-to-lock. 1970 was the changeover year from the slow +/- 4 turn box to the quicker 2-3/4 turn box.

PMDRacer I'm sure you are right about the stops, but the specs I have seen online say the pitman arm lock to lock radius may be smaller on the firebird box. If I remember right, there are stops for the piston travel inside the box.
In 70, they have a variable-ratio that starts slow near the center, then gets faster at the extremes..not quite the same as the fixed "quick-ratio" boxes but still fewer turns. Here's one reference I found for chevies. Not sure if Pontiac did the same, but this says camaro box was 37 degrees radius and chevelle was 43: http://www.chevelles.com/techref/shea_3.html If Pontiac was the same, then I think this means the GTO would not turn as tight with a Firebird steering box. But I'm probably all mixed up if the catalogs show the same part number. |
