69 Pure Stock Trans Am runs 12.33
Still haven't figured how to get the MPH up like the GTO but it sure is very consistent. I'm hoping that there's a few more fellow PY'rs that will join us at the dragstrip next year at the POCI/GTO nats "pure stock drags" event. I'm more than willing to share tips in hopes of increasing the Pontiac contingent at these events in '09.
Here's a video from this past weekends VMP F.A.S.T/FACTORY STOCK event. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIeU5McsRwc Best pass was an 12.33/111mph |

Eric Stambaugh is converting a 70 T/A to Pure Stock specs for next year. I'm converting my sons 68 GTO as well. My brother is going to build a 68 GTO, my nephew is building a 70 GTO. It will take a few years, but I have an original RamAir 68 GTO that serve as my ride, and will be purpose built and hopefully very fast. My shop IS called FAST Automotive! This series is a natural fit!

Friend of mine(engineer) figured that there's an 11.89 pass in that car if I swap engines to capitalize on the weight and chassis advantage of the Trans Am. Still not enough to catch Rick's Ramair II but I'll certainly make him work for the win. Really excited about racing at the Poci/GTO nats next year. Hope you and Steve can make the trip. Are you ready to join us??? I'm an open book when it comes to sharing ideas to recruit new racers. |

Bruno, I love what you've done in the Pure Stocks. You make us all proud! Curious, what size tires are on the 69 T/A? They look a little fatter and taller than stock. I think you're right, doesn't make sense the GTO would mph better than the Firebird. With all things being equal under the hood, the Firebird exhaust manifolds flow better, the 69 Firebird has a smaller frontal area than the 69 GTO, the 69 Firebird sits an inch lower than the 69 GTO, the Firebird should be around 200 pounds lighter than the GTO, and the 69 T/A has a front spoiler to give maybe another 1 mph in the traps.
Is it possible that 9" x 2" filter up in the Ram Air hood is causing a restriction? I'm guessing both the GTO and the Firebird engines were dyno'd, but I'm assuming the small filter was not used on the dyno stand. I know on my car, that 69 Firebird Ram Air setup choked my engine, and I ended up going back to a 1968 Ram Air style setup with a 14" x 3" filter. Heck, you may be able to sneak that one past the techs. Look at the original 1969 RAIV Firebird road test in the book "Musclecar Confessions", and Royal Pontiac used the 1968 Firebird Ram Air setup too.

Thanks Mike. Rules allow us to use G70x14 on the Trans Am.
Glad there's more guys getting cars ready to race next season. Hey Steve..........only 30 passes on Big White......waiting for Poci/GTO nats to let 'er all out. Hope you and Gary can make it. Might even let you take a lap. |

I remember SLP (my next door neighbor at work) Did a bunch of dyno testing in the 90's and they found that the standard GTO aircleaner allowed the engine to produce more power than the RA set up. Must also be related to air filter size since the regular GTO filter is way larger than the RA unit.

Hey John,
SLP findings are correct. My Trans Am suffered badly when a paper air filter was installed while on the chassis dyno.Rich condition appeared above 5000rpm and HP dropped accordingly. G70's work great. NHRA rulebook for engine assembly ensure that all competitors in the Pure Stock class are on the same playing field. |

Yeah but 69 Birds never came with G70, F70 was the max, am I mistaken? Maybe they should call it "Impure stock" :-)

G70's never came on 69 Firebirds, but you know, there's a lot of "rule interpretation" going on here. The Pure Stocks aren't so much about which make/model was originally the quickest back in 1969, it's how well these guys can bend the rules, and it's all fun to watch.

Case study over slips while enjoying a couple of buds? I'm in. My car is a completely different approach than your; but I believe they are close to dead even in preformance, could make for good racing between friends. I don't really care who wins as long a beer induced discussion takes place afterwards
