‘67 LeMans with AC clutch fan noise
I finally have the LeMans running well. It’s really a pleasure to drive now. But one thing that I’ve found is that the clutch fan is very noisy. It’s the original 19.5” AC fan in the original shroud, with the Hayden HD clutch that I bought from one of the popular vendors.
It’s loud enough that I can barely hear the exhaust. Especially when I step on it. It does work well for cooling. Would a fan without the clutch be quieter? I’m not sure if that’s what’s creating the noise. Would it affect cooling? I’ll leave it as is if I have to, but would like to know anyone’s experience with this issue. Thanks. |

Noisy as in engaged all the time, roaring, pushing air? Or bearing noise? If the latter, you sure it’s not the water pump?
To check the fan clutch, with engine off, grab a fan blade, push it forward-backward. If in the fan clutch bearings are losose, you need another fan clutch.

Yes, I believe that roaring would be a good way to describe it. It sounds like a large truck.

It may be engaged all the time. With engine off and cool the fan should rotate freely

Same setup here, 19.5" fan, HD clutch, RARE AC pulleys for 11 bolt pump. AC shroud on non AC radiator. I did the thermo mod to the clutch so it pulls in at a lower temp. Mine sounds just like a dump truck. It may be cavitation of that fan trying to pull air through that split grille. You're the first person to mention what my car does, interesting your car is also a '67.
Can't hear the radio or the exhaust over the fan until it gets up to cruise and the clutch eases up. 180F all the time, so can't argue with that. I'd rather the fan sing the song of its people than overheat in the summer. I'm in South Carolina and it gets HOT here in the summer. Did you do the thermo mod to your clutch? You could try the standard duty thermal clutch, or the standard duty non-thermal clutch Both of those slip more. That big fan has to have some sort of slip clutch, a straight spacer would overspeed it at high RPM. Think fan blade through hood-ville.
