gilg,

That sounds like a great solution! The only concern I might have with crazy glue or some sort of Cyanoacrylic glue, would be that it tends to yellow over time, but if it doesn't show, that could be a great solution. Thanks for sharing your experience.

James

Default Brewster Green and Admiralty blue

I can vouch for those two colors being a GREAT match to original and/or correct repaint colors. Thank you Jamie

Got my welting the other day. Thanks James.
I've seen evidence of these being applied with contact cement. Has anyone else tried that.

I think the most common is the 3M adhesive applied on both parts (welting & flairs), let it tac up for a sec then put it together & bolt them on. Afterwards if any little spots lift, like the tips, you can superglue them down.

WELTING UPDATE 11/17/2023:

Due to a hard drive crash, I have updated the welting lists below to the best of my recollection. If you do not see your name on the listing, please let me know and I will add it back. I am beginning to evaluate adding more colors to the current offering. Possible candidates so far are Atlantis Blue Metallic, Martinique Blue and Goldenrod Yellow. I compared Sterling Silver to Platinum, and they are so close that I think they could be interchangeable. If someone has a Sterling silver car and would like to compare the platinum welting to their car, that would be a big help for me. It needs to be original paint being the only stipulation, and usually I like to compare it to the underside of the trunk, which has not seen 30+ years of the sun.

Let me know what you think, and please get on the list for colors you might want me to make. Thanks again for all of your interest and help.

WELTING UPDATE 12/17/2023:

Color samples have been made. They look pretty accurate to my memory, but now comes the hard part, which is to find an original paint car or sample for the two blues. Anybody have one of the blue cars in original paint in the KC area that wants a free set? I would appreciate the help.

Goldenrod Yellow

Thank you for creating these products. Just ordered two sets for a couple cars I'm working on. Installed some on a car a few months ago which came out great.

What is the recommended way to store these for later use?

It is probably best to keep the welting in the plastic bag it was shipped in to keep it clean. It will stiffen up if kept in a cold area, but you can make it pliable again by soaking it in pretty hot water for a minute or so. It will become very workable at that point. Any vinyl will become still with age and sun exposure.

Thanks for your order.

Regards, James

Hey James, I noticed that Restore a Muscle Car is selling colored welting on Ebay. Are they sourcing it from you, or is someone else reproducing them?

WELTING UPDATE 2/12/2024:

I have been working on the Martinique Blue and Atlantis Blue Metallic samples and have had some input from some of you that have original paint Martinique blue cars. Thanks to Keith Kinowski and Don Bassman for their help with Martinique Blue and Atlantis Blue metallic respectively. thanks to Don Wolting who provided me with parts from his car that I think he owned since new and is still in original paint.

What I'm seeing is the current color for Martinique Blue is slightly different from the original recipe GM used. I think the slight difference is exacerbated by the 30+ years of exposure to the elements. My experience with matching blue paint is that it is very difficult to get an exact match. This was the case with the Lucerne Blue Welting and I imagine I will have the same difficulty with Martinique.

Below is a photo of my paint sample compared to the underside of the trunk of one of Keith Kinowski's cars. You can see it is slightly richer looking and the metallic component is much more prevalent. Some of the differenc is due to the fineness of the metallic component as well as the modern base coat clearcoat systems give the paint much more depth. I think it is a pretty good match.

Also, see the attached photos of the parts Dow Wolting sent me. One was a section of original welting from his car. It had darkened with age so I turner it over to expose the back side, which was not as weathered. The original welting appears darker than the paint. this may be because there isn't a metallic component to the vinyl when extruded. So, it does not have much reflective capabilities. This is what I suspect I am seeing, and I would like to know what you think? Martinique Blue guys especially. Did your original welting appear slightly darker than your original paint?

On Atlantis Blue Metallic, the new formulation appears to be lighter and not quite as greeny (if that is a word). I am not happy with what I have been able to turn up for this color so far. Don Bassman, who provided the comparison to original paint cars agrees with me. So we are on hold for this color for now.

Goldenrod Yellow is waiting for me to be able to make a trek to a friend of mine that has one for me to inspect on-site.

That is where I am currently. Any feedback is welcome. Thanks again.

Is there a new listing for the welting? Am in dire need of brewster set, appears my previously provided ones to body shop has issues, holding up finishing paint.

Can purchase directly and pay for rapid shipping.
