63 Safari Alternator Wiring Woes
So long story short, my alternator went out and got a deal on a summit 140AMP 1 wire capable one. I am running a 6 gauge wire directly to the battery (not the horn relay/ junction block). since the alternator, the previous owner(s) put on was internally regulated the wiring harness seems to be a bit hacked up to accomodate. wagon has a mid 70s 350 with HEI only accessories on car are electric choke, tach oilpressure and watertemp gauge
I was doing some research and had the following questions images here; https://imgur.com/a/0I06mcj a) Do I need an inline fuse/megafuse or fusible link in this system? if so where? b) What is the wire and connector outlined in green (picture 2) going to? (ammeter?) seems when i remove it from junction car wont show any sign of life (no lights no start no crank) c) should I be worried about frying any electrical components like ammeter and dash with an alternator upgrade like this? d) What is up with the wiring situation in picture 3? seems like dark blue was spliced to black wire since there is no more external regulator. Any help and input is appreciated. Last edited by Shah2k; 05-01-2022 at 04:25 AM. Reason: add images |

You need "b" to be connected to that post.
It has the ammeter wire (yellow) and other power wires to the inside. Not sure what the "d" is, possibly for the power circuit to inside? I'd say the "b" wiring has a fusible link in it somewhere? That post is the main buss for the various power wires where power goes to inside and headlights and fuse box.

I would be worried with 140 amp if it is going thru the factory AMP gauge.Tom

I would also eliminate the amp meter and use a volt meter if wanted.
(it would be wired differently for it though)

how would one go about eliminating the ammeter? I know it relates to the yellow wire would I just remove/snip it from that connector that contains the 2 brown wires alongside it? Thanks!

No, I would connect the 2 wires that are at the ammeter posts together.
(the wire is still needed to go to wherever it goes, it just won't have the ammeter in circuit)
