1972 GTO built in Oct 71 - Windage tray or baffled pan?
Going thru a 72 engine. Should we install a windage tray or a baffled pan for an Oct 71 built car?
Thanks |

Oh well, ok then
I thought cars got either one or the other, but not both. Thanks |

I was just being "cute", but using both is what I've always done.
The baffle helps keep oil from sloshing away from the oil pump pickup inlet during hard turns and panic stops, and the windage tray helps keep the crankshaft "windage" from frothing up the oil in the sump. EDIT: BTW - factory install on the 1972 V8's was the windage tray only. The baffled pan showed up for the 1973 model year.

No problemo.
By the way, as I recall you may run only the "3/4 length" windage tray when using the baffled pan. I cannot recall what year model that Pontiac made the change-over to the 3/4 length tray, but I believe that it was prior to the 1972 model year. HTH!.

Concerning the un-baffled pan... I was running one on my FB's previous engine. Despite being filled to spec, when I would brake hard at a stoplight or at the end of the quarter mile I'd see oil pressure drop to nothing. It made my choice of pan ('78) on the next build a very clear one, and haven't had that issue.

I've seen that there are baffles available that can be welded in.
