Painting a firewall
I am cleaning up the engine department on my 72. The original paint on the firewall was stained and blotchy, so I stripped it and hit it with some semi gloss. It turned out looking to glossy for my liking. What is the best stuff to use for a factory look finish?

WalMart has a spray paint called "Rust Contol Enamel" in Satin that is close to that low gloss on the firewall.

Paint stores...
sell gloss black AND flattening agents...to give any hue you want. With that...you can do flat, 40% gloss, 60% gloss and straight gloss or true flat at will. Solves everything! Fenderwells, frame, floor pans and firewall are NOT all the same hue. Just sayin'. Show contrast and get it close...I guarantee no judges will be able to dispute your work. Good luck. Ron

I've had pretty good luck with the underhood Black from Martin-Senor from NAPA in spray cans. Sprays nice and covers well and in my opinion very close to factory.

I've used Rustoleum Satin Black in the past but will check this out as I get ready for some freshening.

Yes I think they either changed the name or disco'd the satin name. I use this too, looks good enough for me.

The gloss Rustoleum in the quart can looks and works great thinned with acetone and sprayed through your gun. In spite of it's name, is only semi glossy in appearance. You can't beat the price and it's pretty tough stuff too...

Krylon makes a very good product in my opinion. Their 'Rust Tough' formula is my all time favorite rattle can paint. I love that fan spray nozzle.

Thanks for the compliment Roger. I myself feel that the Martin Senour paint is as close to factory as I've found so far. I'm impressed that a show judge was impressed with the conversion we did. Took some time but I think the end result was worth it.
