Default Pontiacs at the Petersen

Defined as one of the most significant moments in GTO history, Jim Wangers convinced David E. Davis, Editor of Car and Driver magazine, to conduct a comparison test of the Pontiac GTO versus a Ferrari GTO. The March 1964 issue of Car and Driver hit newsstands with the test results and, as they say, "The rest is history!"

Jim Wangers invites you to attend this special Petersen Museum "cruise-in" as we celebrate a very special birthday...the 50th birthday of the famous 1964 Car and Driver GTO Test Car. Ordered out by Jim Wangers on November 2, 1963, the car rolled out of Pontiac Engineering on November 8, 1963. It was not until Jim Wangers published his autobiography, Glory Days nearly 40 years later was it revealed that a 421 cubic inch Pontiac engine had been secretly installed in the car for the magazine test.

This very GTO and the Car and Driver test published in the March 1964 issue set the enthusiast world on end and launched both the Pontiac GTO and Car and Driver to prominence.

You are also invited to attend Jim Wangers presentation in the Board Room about the history of the GTO and some of the crazy hijinx that surround the making of a legend.

Please join Pontiac and Musclecar enthusiasts on October 27th as we gather at the Petersen to celebrate the 50th Birthday of the Car and Driver Pontiac GTO...the GTO that launched the Musclecar Era!
