Default Odometer not rolling, Speedo bouncing

My recently purchased 64 GTO was missing the speedo cable, so I bought the "correct" cable and hooked it up. The speedometer pod now functions, but the needle wobbles too much to be considered accurate and the odometer doesn't tick. When attaching the speedo cable to the Muncie M20 tranny, I noticed that the connection (inside) was a little loose. I'm not sure how long it's been exposed to the elements (and road debris). My question is; Is there a part in the tranny that should be replaced, (I'm not sure of the inner workings there) or does anyone think the instrument pod is bad... or both. Any insight would be appreciated. - Thanks ...Go Sox!
