I think it's more than teens putting wings, etc. - it's lowest-common denominator thinking. The same people who add SS badges to everything, or paint a Mopar purple or red. A large percentage of people do this, and that's their right, but then we are the ones who have to deal with it when cruising eBay or Barrett-Jackson. I've seen many pedigreed cars that have been "ruined" by a zealous owner who wants to add every do-dad.
But we're geeks in comparison, and there's room for plenty of folks in the hobby, so this kind of behavior will continue.
Kinda on a tangent, I know of an ultra-rare 1967 Plymouth Belvedere I Hemi car that's one of a handful built, as the Hemi generally was restricted to the GTX that year. Some guy had an original one and decided to tub it. Why not get a /6 Belvedere and modify that? Well, it was his car, and he did what he wanted.
