I have acquired a bunch of old never opened oil. Brad Penn, Mobil One and Valvoline high mileage it’s like 52 quarts total. It’s all never opened and was stored in a basement so never froze. It’s all 10-11 years old question is would you use it? I have done a bunch of research just curious what you guys think.

I’d use it in a heartbeat.

Heck, I’ve been pouring a bottle of GM EOS in at every oil change on my GTO since ‘08. I got those bottles off of a fellow PY member and it looks like they were decades old when I got them.
I wouldn’t hesitate to use your oil, and it’s probably got those high levels of zinc our cams like anyway.

Research says, that the additive package definitely goes bad after a number of years sitting. The oil is still fine as far as a lubricating agent, but the additive package does not do what it was designed to initially.

I thought when I ordered five gallons of oil in the container, I think it expired after 5 years. I would do so more research if you are putting it in your car.

My rep says 5 years. But maybe that is to cover their butts. I know I’ve used oil way older than that, and on some of my low use vehicles, the oil is older than that in the pan.

Wow. Vehicles you still start and drive on occasion? That's what it sounded like Bill is doing. I'd love to see an oil analysis posted up on that, I've never left one in that long to even send in a sample, don't think I want to. Even the nomad which I parked in about 1990-ish still gets it's oil changed once a year. I start it up to move around only and maybe every 6 months I'll cruise it through the neighborhood just to exercise it.

So.me of my cars are still running the same oil that when I bought em ten years ago . They run real fine... I only change oil when its pitch black, except for my diesels when fresh oil gets pitch black after a 10 minutes run.
I .probably the worst example for preventive maintenance , if it aint broken dont fix it lol Enjoy your vintage oil Last edited by besserspat; 05-11-2024 at 10:55 PM. |

Dinosaurs all died 65 million years ago. Ten years on processed oil doesn't seem that much by comparison.

Oil is the 2nd most available liquid on earth besides water. Some oil company executives are finally admitting the earth just makes it. Some old wells are filling up again. IMO its a ruse by oil companies to make us think crude oil is so rare, its not. Since there are no Dinosaurs running around that stuff must be about to run out ? Just the US alone consumes 19 million barrels of oil everyday. From dead animals that turn into dirt ? This oil, if it looks good, run it. |

As long as the containers are air tight, it should be fine. I'd get a white, clean, container and pour some into it. Oil will trap moisture, at the bottom, over time. Make sure there isn't any sludge in the bottoms.

Yep. I would absolutely use it. I don't care what the internet says. And I did. I got about a dozen cases of about 8 year old proline from a closed down pep boys in the old style packaging/labeling.. Its all gone except for some 10w-30.

The life span of motor non synthetic oils at stated degrees Fahrenheit.
Note the substantial loss in life from 230 degree to 290 degrees , just a 60 degree change.

I opened a case of valvoline racing oil i had had for a few years and there was a little "sludge" in each quart kind of like cream separating from milk. I decided not to use it .
