Good pads for manual disc set up?
Can anyone recommend something for manual discs? Some manufacturers list hot and cold friction coefficients and pad characteristics. I’d guess you’d want something that had good initial bite and worked ok cold?

I like the Porterfield pads and shoes. Having matching performance shoes and pads really makes a big difference..

Assuming you don't pads for anything other than street driving and occasional trips to the drag strip where demands on the braking system are minimal. As a road course track instructor with BMWCCA, I see lots of different pads used by people. Some street pads, some race pads, and some hybrid street/track pads (which are never good). Some of it comes down to personal preference.
I happen to prefer semi-metallic pads over the ceramic pads that are often pushed by parts counters these days. The ceramic pads are silent and definitely have less dust than semi-metallic, but they don't have the bite that I want. As far as Hawk pads go, I've never been impressed by their products. They tend to be more dusty, noisy, and have a shorter lifespan. I think they became popular in certain circles just due to prolific marketing. As far as real life goes, they leave much to be desired in my view. Porterfield pads have a better reputation than Hawk, but my go-to for pads is Performance Friction (PFC). I'm not sure if they make pads in the size that you need, however.

Perhaps.
I have HPS's on my TA with manual 4 wheel disc and the only time they showed any weakness was at a road track where I was driving it hard enough to blue the rotors. They perform better than part's store semi-metallics; I do not know anything about Porterfields. |
