Tri Power EFI Conversion
Some time back there was an article in High Performance magazine featuring a 65 GTO (clone) convertible that the owner had converted his tripower into an EFI setup. I had saved that particular issue, but have misplaced it or lost it.
The car was a cloned LeMans, yellow, white interior, with a built 455 and I think a 5 speed. The EFI conversion was very stealthy, and I am very interested in making a similar setup. I purchased a tripower kit from Ames probably 4 years ago, so I am not messing up anything particularly valuable. Does anyone still have this magazine with the article or is it somewhere out there on the web? Hot Rod magazine has a web article about it, but the article was severely edited, so it was basically useless. Are there any previous posts regarding this? I did look around but found nothing. My GTO project (65 GTO 4 speed Convert) was put on hold with some other projects, and will be getting back to it soon, but I really would love to EFI the tripower. Thanks! |

Would not be hard to do with Port Fuel Injectors.
Weld the Bungs on the runners, remove the "guts" of the Tri-Power carbs: Nozzle assy, float, choke, etc. Use the external parts so that they act like 3 Throttle Bodies. Switch on the secondary carbs to tell the EFI that the extra carb airflow is coming. Speed Density system could function like a EFI/ Dry NOS system where the computer has to add the extra fuel properly using just the injectors. Tom V.

Saw a old style Hemi dual quad in a magazine a few years ago they gutted the dual carbs and had the injectors on the bottom side of the ports hidden.

I've had those thoughts also Tom on mine! I think plenty of room underneath for short injectors and fuel rail.

EFI Tripower
After poking around a little, the individual I am looking for is Ben Stegman. I can't find any contact information in any of my searches as of yet. I do know that he welded up the manifold heat crossovers and cut them back for a fuel rail underneath the manifold where it is not easily seen. I vaguely remember some of the electronics (TPS, etc) also installed where they could not be easily seen. The original article, that I am searching for, went into much better detail than the Hot Rod Magazine archives. I am far from an expert in EFI, but I am days away from converting my 70 SS El Camino to a Holley Sniper EFI system, but that is a completely different animal.
Does anyone have a recollection about the article? I am interested in more details of some of the parts used in the process, fully realizing that there are certainly improvements in components since the article was written. Does his name ring a bell with anyone... Ben Stegman? Do you think if I contacted Ames they may have some contact info on him that they could maybe provide him my contact info? I know this is kinda a needle in a haystack... Thanks!

Both are friends on FB and looks like both drive GTO convertibles. In Wichita Kansas. Ben was an aircraft tech. The one on FB has several friends with airplane pics in their profile. Coincidence? Thanks! I was able to find the magazine with the article, but as you said, there was not a lot of additional info from the online article. I guess now is the time to fully contemplate this project!

Check out : "Autotrend EFI". They have the billet 2g efi carbs, sorry couldn't copy and paste.

Pretty.
Pure 1 to 1 linkage on all three carbs must be fun to drive. More of a on off switch deal vs stock type progressive linkage. Tom V.
