Default Comp 290B-6 vs 300B-6 vs Crower 60353?

For a 11.5 : 1 CR 469" in a 3100# - 3200# car with 265/210 cfm ported D ports, Tomahawk intake, 850 DP, 1 3/4" headers, Turbo-400 with brake, 9" rear with 3.73's.

I'm not concerned with street manners or running pump gas. I have not bought a converter yet, so I can match that. The car will probably see a 150 shot at some point as well. I have a NX plate system that I will probably use, but don't want to get crazy with the cast crank.

I'd consider an Ultradyne version.

The intake lobe on the Comp 290B-6 has 160 dur @ .200

Intake F4
292
259 @ .050
170 @ .200
0.3677 lobe lift

Exhaust F13
300
267 @ .050
176 @ .200
0.3823 lobe lift

110 LSA

Or maybe contact Mike Jones.
http://jonescams.com/

I think the car might respond well to a Victor or Northwind intake.

Yes, a better intake will be added later, but I'll start out with the Tomahawk because I have it.

The Ultradyne grind would have to be bought from Bullet, correct?

Yes, Bullet Cams has the Ultradyne masters.

Lunati also did have a set of UD masters, but they don't list lobes in their catalogue anymore. Not sure if that matters.

The lobes listed above at Lunati were:

UF4 292 259 170 .368

UF13 300 267 176 .382

-----------------------------------

Comp has the GRI lobes.
They recommend to nitride the cam with these lobes and use small chamfer oiling lifters.

GRI intake lobe 16210
285
258 @ .050
170 @ .200
.379 lobe lift

XTX exhaust lobe 6414
300
266 @ .050
173 @ .200
.367 lobe lift

See 12.2 ET signature for the smallest large cam you could run. No ping on 87 Octane, 1/4 mile on 89 Octane. 9.0 :1 low compression. Probably real crisp on 11.5:1.

12.0&11.0 ET signatures shows the cam i'd recommend per your Post #1 for Street-Strip performance and manners.

Very similar to my combination. I am 200 lbs heavier and have been 10.67. I am using a Victor and dominator which picked up quite a bit over a torker II in my case.

If you don't mind sharing, I'd love to know more about your combo. I am actually going to be running a '78 Lemans, so it is a G body style car like your's. I've been away from racing for years, but I'm ready to jump back in. I've always had and driven Pontiacs, but I've always raced Chevy small blocks, so I'm not as familiar setting up a Pontiac to fly.

My goal is to get the parts I have into the 6's on motor. After hearing you guys talk, I think I'll go ahead and get a Victor. I'll have to do something about a hood on this car sooner than later, but I'll just have to make it happen. I'm planning in building a better engine next year, but I'm going to start out with the stuff j have laying around for now. We have stripped the car, installed a cell, battery relocation, and the cage is on the way. I'm weld mounts to my 9" and I have all the other stuff listed. The car cane with headers and already Pontiac powered luckily, so I'm good there.

I run the 300B-6 in my 468. It works good for my combo.

That is impressive! I notice you have better head, and I wonder if the 300B-6 would be too much for my iron D-Ports?

My combination is pretty simple. The car is an 82 Buick Regal Estate Wagon, UMI rear suspension parts, afco shocks, and an anti roll bar. All this is hooked to a 9" rear with 3.70 gears and a 28x9 tire. The front end has loose steel bushings and strange single adjustable shocks with v6 springs that have been slightly trimmed.
I am also running a pretty basic TH400 with a 10" converter from PTC that flashes to 4500.

The motor is a 400 stroked to 461, eagle rods and cast crank. It has the older design ross flat top pistons that are below deck about .015 with the compression in the 11.5 range. This short block was never really intended to be a race motor but I re purposed it. The heads are CVMS done 62's that are probably in the 250 range(Never flowed but I trust what Jim tells me). The 290b has been installed by the cam card as also recommended by Jim. He said to put it there and not retard it any due to the rear end gear. I am running 1.5 harland sharp rockers as Jim said more lift was not really needed with my heads. I have 1 3/4 headers with a 3.5" x pipe and mufflers dumped at the rear axle.

I originally was running an 850 with a torker 2 and went 11.06 at 119 I believe on 110 race fuel. I swapped to a cleaned up victor with a 1050 dominator on E85 and instantly went 10.67 at 123. I was pretty pleased with that.

The lunati cams have some of the old ultradyne type grinds. I just took out a nice older ultradyne 263/271 .556 lift solid cam.

What kind of times did you get out of that cam?

I have had the 290b go 10.80 in .030" over 455 with ported 260 cfm iron heads, 1.65 rockers, reworked T2 , 850 Carb , 12 to 1 comp , 4.11 gears in a early bird at near 3500 with driver.
The thing makes so much torque even with 11 to 1 in that size motor that even on the street with 3.55 gears I would find no drivability issues!

I had this big Schneider Cam custom ground for a very similar application/intention.

I ran the 290B6 for a couple years. I got a 10.92 @ 120 out of it with my SD Performance 325 E-heads @ 3550 lbs. If you're doing a budget build, it and the lifters are sitting on a shelf collecting dust...

6000 1/2 & 2/3 when I shift manually. When I run it in drive it shifts at 5600 1/2 & 2/3. It runs the same ET either way I shift it too. With iron heads, I was running a 262/268 Crower grind, shifting at 5500 1/2 & 2/3 manually.

I don't have my written down results in front of me, but I degreed back to back a HC-03 and a 290B-6 camshaft about 6 years ago and the seat to seat durations were near identical ... could be they were spec`ed out at different lifts for seat to seat advertised duration... of course LDA, ICL, and lift were different as expected..

Not so sure I would trust published data on the B-6 is all..
