Performance Years - November 2013 | | MORE FOR YOUR PONTIAC! WINTER BE DAMNED!! Another cold, blustery Winter is upon us. And those of us in the Northern parts of the country are getting ready to put their Pontiacs away for the season. Good news for you is that PY doesn't take time off In fact, during the winter months it's time for us to bog down and hit the R&D really hard. We work all winter long trying to create and produce new products.
The upcoming Winter will be one of the busiest ever for PY. Not only are we continuing to come out with new products for our classics, but we are also starting to hit the late model market hard. Come next Spring, you will see many first of its kind reproductions for the newer Pontiacs. If only Christmas was in the Spring!! ROUND PORT vs. D-PORT | For those of us that haven't been in the business that long, some terms are just new and foreign to us. Luckily for us, one of our PY Techs wrote a short article on the differences between Round Port and D-Port heads.
Most Pontiacs are D-ports. Round ports came out in 1968 and were used til 74 and they are pretty rare. You need to know date and casting to properly ID heads. Below is a pic and partial chart.
Round port castings are 96, 722, 614,197, 7F6 and 16 - The twist is 96 and 16 are also D-ports - only 1968 #96 are round port (ram air 2 - very rare) and only 1973 #16 is round port (Super Duty)
All RAM AIR IV are round port. All 71 Judges and all 71 & 72 Trans Ams are 455HO round ports - 1970 455HO is D-port! All RAM AIR 3 is D-port.
Any head prior to 1968 is D-port and any head after 1974 is D-port.
Aftermarket aluminum heads: Edelbrock makes both round port and D port heads now. The round ports have flat floor exhaust passages. They look like D-ports to uneducated customers. They just came out with D-port heads to compete with Kauffmans.
Kauffmans make D-ports and their high ports are round port. Wenzler heads are round ports.
RAM AIR 5 heads are unique and use a different exhaust altogether - those heads are now reproduced - no exhaust available.
