Noob mistake, please help
Well I got a little over excited about installing the HEI distributor in my 67 GTO. I checked the base timing before I pulled the old distributor but I forgot to set cylinder 1 tdc. now I'm not sure which direction the rotor was pointing when I removed it. I'd prefer not to take a 50/50 chance of being 180 degrees off.
Please help. Also does anybody have any pictures of where you spliced into the fuse box for the 12v wire to the HEI? Otherwise will a shorting bar on the back side of the ignition switch from "ignition 1" and "ignition 2" provide the same results and allow me to use the 2 wires that were originally on the coil +?

Loosen #1 spark plug and turn engine over by hand till you hear air blowing past spark plug. Put the balancer line on tdc. Then make sure that your rotor is pointing toward number one and not number six.

Well, and splicing in a HEI connector from Summit at the HEI end. |

What did you use to strap your ign 1 and 2?

[QUOTE=67gtospud;5030525]When looking down at the rotor, #1 position is about 1:30 correct?
After putting the engine on tdc I take a long flat tip screwdriver to turn the oil pump driveshaft a little until the distributor drops in with the rotor button pointing at number one cylinder. Then wire that terminal as #1. Doing it like this the rotor is normally pointing at about 5 o'clock when standing in front of the car. Number one can start anywhere though, just make sure number one plug wire is where the rotor is pointing. |

#1 is where you number one spark plug wire is. Usually around 1-2 o'clock, but it should be the terminal on you distributor cap that goes the the number one plug wire. |

Just a short piece of wire and some solder.

So just solder ignition 1 terminal to ignition 2 terminal and that's it? This wont mess with anything else?

You can tap into the pink wire at the Ig switch plug and run a wire to the hei. The circuit is protected by fuse link.

What I did was to pull the Packard 56 terminals out of the connector, wrap the wire ends around them, solder, snap them back in. |

Thanks for the help everybody! I think I've got it back where it should be. I removed the valve cover just to insure both valves were closed when I brought cylinder 1 to tdc, set the timing marks to "0" and installed the distributor with the rotor facing about 1:30 when looking down at it. I haven't been able to start the engine yet since I'm waiting on wires. I still have to tap into a 12v source or jump ignition 1 terminal to ignition 2. But I don't have the dash harness installed yet and am not sure whether I'm reusing the existing harness or purchasing a new one.
Thanks again, Spud
