Question 79 Lemans? Grand Am? What

I looked at what I thought was a 1979 Pontiac Lemans. It was a black 2 door with v8, buckets, floor shift auto, gauges. What has me confused is it had a small ducktail spoiler on the deck lid and louvers on the quarter windows. Did any 1979 models have these features or did someone dress this car up?

Thanks
Steve

The car Scott W posted is the Grand Am CA (for Can Am) prototype Pontiac built in 1978, I have about 5-6 different articles on it. It was cool car, but was never produced, so obviously it can't be the car in the pic. It does have a ducktail spoiler, but no quarter window louvers.

The car Steve saw must have some aftermarket or home-fabbed parts on it. I would love to see a pic of the actual car.

Hot Rod Magazine did that build. The car was in Arizona last yime i knew, but it was for sale.
But, as you mentioned it was a 4 speed car.

1979 Grand Am VIN would be 2G27W9P (W for 4 barrel Y if it had a 2 barrel)

I was thinking of the Sterling Edition, but I think that might have been the Grand Prix in '79 or '80.

I know of no louvers on any of the 78-81 Lemans,GA. Even on the show cars.

I think they said in one article 190 horses; which would have made it pretty ballsy for a late 70s engine.

I think that 2k is a fair price. There is a MINT 50K original V8 78 Grand Lemans in Spring Lake for $4500.00 that needs nothing but a new owner. I have seen the car it is beautiful. It has been for sale for 2 years. Thats my 2 cents.

Looks like a 1979 GA with '81 LeMans face and tails. Mix n Match parts like legos.

The GTO badge is definitely a mis-match, the purists would have panic attacks if they saw this!

One other thing about the '81 front, it was a one-year wonder. It's too bad they didn't keep it on the 82-87 Bonneville G body.

WELL!!! I went to inspect it again and talked to the owner this time. Dash plaque does say Grand Am. Build date is 12/79 title says 80 All indications say it is an 80 Grand Am with an 81 front fascia added and I am the new owner!!!! Got it with the tires and rims, 301 4 bbl PONTIAC motor with estimated 5000 miles on rebuild, some rear frame rust and a little in the body but not too bad for less than 2k. Picking it up tomorrow pm.

Sounds like a good deal! Give me a shout if you need any Lemans specific parts once you get started.

Congrats on the new ride Steve. Could you post a good picture of the dash plaque?

Has anyone else seen the "Grand Am" in wood grain? I've seen Bonneville and Grand Lemans, so maybe someone working on the line slipped it (or a few) through?

Thanks Lightfoot. I'm happy to say that the second digit is indeed a G.

80 Grand Am VIN's were all 2G27WAPxxxxxx

So it appears to be an 80 G/A with the newer gauges and wood trim interior and the other options mentioned. I think the tail lights are still correct
As lighfoot mentioned, a PHS would tell you more about how the car was ordered.
