1974 Ventura SPRINT
Hi,
Does anyone have any idea on production numbers of the '74 Sprint? I just bought one with 18,000 original miles YES that's correct and it's Buccaneer Red with tach / guages. Beautiful survivor. |

Nice find!! Go to Ultimategto.com and look there for production numbers. There was only 7000 and some change GTO's made for 74, not sure about the Sprints.

That is a beautiful car. Maybe the guy that runs the Ventura website may know.

Dang, that things beautiful!!
I had a blue 74 Sprint with the white interior, black dash and rubber floor mat, not even carpet. 350 2bbl, turbo 350 with a floor shifter and console, no gauges. Bucket seats, non air car, it really moved for what it was. Car got rear ended by a drunk, luckily while parked. Still drove it for a while with the right reat quarter pushed up into the trunk. Ended up parting it out because it was just too far gone. Also had a 73 Sprint with the eggcrate grills. Look like the same material the 72 GTO grills are made out of.

1971 - 1,525 (4.4% of total Ventura 2dr production) 1972 - 4,080 (8.0% of total Ventura 2dr production) Below is total Ventura production for 1974: 2dr sedan 47,782 2dr hatchback 16,694 4dr sedan 17,323 Total 81,799 My guess is that there were probably around 3,000 Sprints produced in 1974. With the GTO moved to the Ventura body that year, you would think that would have taken away from Sprint sales. There were 7,058 GTOs produced in 1974, that is about 10% of total 2dr Ventura production |

Thanks everyone. I imagine the production number had to be very low especially the way it's equipped. Maybe 1 of 1 like all the Chryslers seem to be.

The magic production number you're looking for is 346 Sprints produced for 1974. That according to Murray Shaw at his site http://www.members.shaw.ca/murraygto , who converted his Sprint to a GTO a while back (I knew I saw the info somewhere...)
Just don't ask for how many of each individual flavor were made Great car you've got there. |

Just got the new HPP and read the article. Nice car! I've always liked the '74 Ventura's especially after seeing "The Seven Ups".
Seems like you had to go 'round and 'round with the owner for quite some time before buying it. Was he unreasonable with the price? I know the article stated that he refused to budge but I was wondering if he was just stubborn or had "B-J Syndrome"? |

Stubborn!
The seller was just stubborn. He pulled a price out of the air and then carved it in stone. I am glad he finally let up a little. I have heard of the movie you talk about sounds like I need to watch it.
Thanks, Steve |

I just received my copy of the March 2011 issue of HPP. Great article and story on your Ventura Sprint. Congratulations! |

Just got my copy of The Seven UP's (Ebay purchase won for $1.58). The acting is something to be desired...I could not wait for the chase scene so I fast forwarded, it was awesome, you can tell the same director did this film as well as Bullet, almost sounded like the same engine sounds as Bullet. I have never seen so many Pontiacs in one movie. Seeing the big 4 door Pontiac sliding around corners was thrilling...I have a 4 door Grandville...somehow I can't imagine spinning it around any corners. The Ventura was awesome sounded like it was making 400+hp. I really enjoyed when the bad guy shot the front of the Ventura and the whole hood flew off!

That has been my favorite movie car chase for ages, and now I found out that the last section of the chase was filmed on the Taconic Parkway, which wouldn't have meant a great deal to me before last month.
Coming home from Maine on Thanksgiving weekend, we decided to avoid potential traffic back-ups in Hartford and Waterbury by taking the Mass Pike all the way to NY and coming down the Taconic Parkway. None of us had taken that road before and it was an interesting change of pace. I was watching that chase and when they got out on the divided highway, it looked real familiar. Then I read the comments. |
