In looking at the cracks in mine they open up as the side flexes by the dipstick tube hole. Those slots actually act as a scraper and redirect the oil back in the pan(side note I had read once a scraper only really works good with a pan kick out as a place for the oil to go otherwise oil just stacks up there). The factory tray kind of does that with the side rail that is curved to direct oil back in pan. I guess the vibration of the oil scarping off the crank gets it moving enough to crack along those rough edges of the slots(polish like rod beams?). Wondering if maybe welding some extra tabs from the edge to the tray would support it better and still drain oil back down.

I talked to a well resected POntiac engine builder today about this cause my factory tray is also cracked in the same place. Your on the right track as he said its basically the oil beating the stock pan to death above 5000 rpm or so and that I needed to go with an aftermarket "Canton tray and scraper" for use in over 400 hp and 5200 rpm performance engines. He said welds would not hold that the pan would just crack again at the welds.

I have been running my windage tray since 1981, except for the times the engine has been down for other reasons. It is not very pretty, but it is still in good shape. Three pictures follow.

OMT did you weld on that thing? Looks like some beads on those tabs.
