costs too much, I have based most of my information on the fact I've never laid eyes on those numbers (in pictures or person) and will admit my fault if proof is out there. Also, according to the AMA specifications for the Tempest, LeMans, LeMans Sport and GTO (dated 9-3-69) it lists 455 Eng. with Ram Air Inlet and carb. numbers 7040273 and 7040270 (no California carbs. are listed in document).

As you say, PHS docs will tell the tale, but my bet is that Ram Air was standard equipment on ALL Judges, which would mean that your car is not a Judge. Bob: Great information. Of course, your build sheet/manifests would not show ANY CA emissions equipped cars. Mine is a CA emissions equipped car, therefor the "WN" build sheet carb code, and the 7040570 and WN stamping on the carburetor itself. Also makes sense that the UPC 601 Hood Air Inlet option was restricted to 455 cars, since Ram Air was standard equipment on RA III and RA IV cars, and unavailable with the base 400 4V engine.

However, in the application listings (which admittedly show replacement numbers ONLY), the Ram Air equipped 455's used the exact same carburetor as the Ram Air III and Ram Air IV 400's. Marty P. sent several carburetors along with the 1970 455 Ram Air automatic GTO I just purchased from him. All but one are obviously NOT the carb which came on this car, but one MIGHT be. It's a 7040570, which in the 1970 carburetor charts shows to be OEM on a California equipped 1970 Ram Air 400. Maybe Jon, Cliff, Rocky R. or Kenth will stop in and have better info. Hope this helps!

gotcha. as it is with most things surrounding this hobby, there are no absolutes. i figured zazarines book would have been "corrected" by the time the 1995 revision came out. it appears not.

ctm,
455's were avail in '70 Judges, though later in the production year. Zazzarine & Roberts "GTO Resto Guide" is wrong, it was written AGES ago & is loaded with errors & omissions. The "0278" & "0279" carbs were never used, CarbKing has dispelled rumors to their supposed 455 RA use many times, in print, & here on the forum. The 7036912 & 7036914 have to be Rochestor Service carb numbers used for over the counter replacements in the mid '70's. 455 availability... 455's were avail in regular '70 GTO's fairly much from beginning of '70 model production. With RamAir & 455, said engine was avail in a '70 GTO at least avail as early Nov 1969, have whats left of a sucha documented 4spd 455 RA car. Would, however, not surpise me if 455 engine with RamAir hood inlet was avail from near beginning of production. Hopes this helps.

The 455 cars did use the 7040270,7040273 and the 7045270,705273 CA only carbs if they came equiped with RA. The best way to check which carb your car had is to verify with the build sheet. My 455 HO convert with RA and auto specifies the "WA" carb in the carb square on the build sheet which is the 7040270 and correct for the auto with RA. Those build sheets are nice for determining which part your particular car was built with.

The 7040278, 9, 0578, 9 has been beat to death! These carburetors exist only on paper. For more information, search the archives. If one can locate one's build sheet, the build sheet ends ALL carburetor arguments for the car (the posted one above helps verify the numbers).
And I will assume responsibility for this error in Pete's book. Between the first and second printings of the book, I checked the carb numbers, and sent documented information to Pete. Pete did not have access to the carburetor library that I have. If you have both copies, you will see a number of changes (mostly mid-year introductions; Pete did a wonderful job of research). At this time, I did not have proof that the 78 and 79 numbers do not exist (other than in the Pontiac parts book). This is not the first time something was planned, and then did not go into production. How about the 1957 Pontiac dual quads???? and I HAVE BLUEPRINTS ON THESE! By the way, they were Carter and not Rochester. Much better setup than the tripower. Wish they had gone into production! Our database of knowledge grows. Pete's book is a wonderful early work on Pontiac which is one of the foundations for additional research, and still extremely useful today. If one checks Eric White's book (used by GTOAA for judging), one will find no reference of the 78 and 79 numbers. Jon.
