NEW GTO 1/4 Mile Debut
Funny thing happened at Speedworld yesterday. I took my 67 LeMans street car just to do a test and tune session. I pulled in the staging lanes and what do I see next to me? A 2004 GTO with an automatic. I thought this would be fun since my 67 runs 13's and I thought it would be a close race. The guy had just bought the car the day before and had 120 miles on it. He said that they just hit the show rooms a few days ago here in Phoenix. Well the announcer in the tower made a point of the old and new etc. Any how My car ran a 13.63 not impressive but fast enough to smoke the new GTO. Here are his numbers right off my time slip.
RT .960, guess he was reading the news paper at the light 60' 2.716 1/8 mile ET 9.884 1/8 mile MPH 77.758 1/4 mile ET 14.953 1/4 mile MPH 97.873 The guy was so embaressed that he left and was no where to be seen after the run. In fact I was even embaressed since it was a Pontiac and all. Tim C

Hey don't jump my a**. I am just posting the facts. Maybe your buddy had a better density altitude on the day he ran his numbers. I am just the reporter. Find someone else to attack so you can feel better about the car. They guy did spin, but not for 300 feet, I had two friends there watching the run, no excessive tire spin. My car weighs 3920 and my MPH was 101.895 and the GTO was 97.873. The density altitude was around 3500 feet when we made the run.

Yet your posted time is over 3 tenths slower than Nick's on his first day with his GTO... |

There's video on another site, of one going 11.76 on 100 shot of NOS. Damn things are pretty quick. Im sure with some tuning, tires, and a few mods, they will be as quick as some LS1 T/A's... Even though I dont really like the body style, Im sure it will grow on me.

Hey Champ, The 330 for the GTO was 6.696.

Thanks Tim So using my earlier comparison:
quote:
The 60' times were 2.716 vs. 1.915 = .801 difference The 1/8th mile times were 9.884 vs. 8.459 = 1.435 difference. That's over 6 tenths lost between the 60' and the 1/8th mile. Chances are, the bulk of that difference is at the 330' time.

The difference in the 330' times is 1.261 seconds. As I predicted, the bulk of the difference was in the first 330'. The owner/driver of this car should have made some more passes to try and learn how to better HIS performance. His time is more a reflection of his ability than that of the car. I am no expert at drag racing (and have proved it on the track... ), but that is my problem, not that of the vehicle I was driving. |

Tim- Some people just cant accept the fact that this new GTO is overblown hype. I posted this in the Lobby and it got pulled! I was standing right at the line when this race happened. The gto didnt loose traction. The MPH tells everything. Even if he had lost traction the MPH would still be close to Nicks. If Nicks is really stock.

It really is hard for some people to accept the fact the old cars run as hard as they do...Robert

I'll be out at Speedworld soon with my 04. I guarantee it'll put down better than a 14!

LOL this one made me laugh. It's so true. It's like the saying, everyone has a plan till they get punched in the face
It's not just the new cars, it's the old ones too. Lots of smack talk at cruise night but at the track it becomes painfully obvious to many. |

So post the 330' times...

It clearly states at the link on the PY Online Forums page: THE LOBBY Use if you don't see an appropriate forum. Here's the link to the thread you started. Nick's car is stock (for now) and all the details are in his thread in the 2004 GTO forum. |

The Champ- The real indicator is the MPH. Its pratically independent of ET. He would have had to smoke the tires halfway down the strip to affect it. He didnt. A little squeal off the line is all I heard. That could have been Tims car. These are realistic times for this car for your average driver considering it was an automatic and the weather was bad. about 97-99 degrees out and DA running about 3500-3700 ft. Had Nick V. brought his new GTO out to Speedworld that day. I would have put my money on Tim.

It's his board, he can do that. Your post was never pulled as you claimed in your earlier post on this thread, just moved per the instructions for The Lobby. I, for one, am thankful for Chris making this board available to all of us for the discussions that we have here. |

There was a new GTO on slicks @ Irwindale's T n T last Thurs. nite that ran a 8.8 on the motor and 8.3 on the bottle, didn't get the mph. My GTO ran 8.2 @ 84 in the 1/8th that night.

Free up the intake & exhaust tracts, swap the cam, do a little tweaking with LS1edit, put on some slicks and it'll go a bit faster than 14s. |

Personally, I will always have more interest in and respect for the cars that are built over ones that are bought.
I work as a analyst for a BMW dealer and we get M3's, M5's and a few Ferarri's through the doors every now and then. Technology is great, but BMW still doesn't make any torque. Everything they do is with high rpm and low gears, but the cars don't bury you in the seat like a 440 Chrysler or 455 Pontiac. They don't turn outstanding 1/4 mile times either. A very overrated, high-maintenance car. I remember back in the 1980's when the Grand National came out. Everybody was talking about how this car would run 12's off the showroom floor and the local dealer, ***gart Buick in Porterville, CA. gave one to his boy to drive. They would indeed go fast, but the poor oiling system and self-aligning rods in the 3.8 kept spitting the lower end out of it on an almost monthly basis. I see a lot of fad cars in my current occupation. They just don't excite me like the early iron...Robert |

Talk about a blast from the past! A thread from 2004 lol That said, this was an all time bad take. If you are kicking rods out of a GN, you got detonation out the ass, and even then it'll probably push a head gasket before it spits rods out. But ya know, wtf do I know?
