70 GTO 455 Ram Air Question
There is a 70 GTO 455 on E Bay now that is in Rapid city South Dakota
Originally Gold per the PHS My question is this the PHS shows 455 Automatic At the end it says 1970 engine ID page: 7040268 with ram air but below it has a carb listed as 70405781 I believe one carb is automatic and the other stick When you bought a 455 was Ram Air standard or an option the engine ID page is confusing I went to Eric Whites book 1970; optional 455 L75 still not clear I can say this I have looked on E Bay for over 2 decade every week for 1970 GTO's. Really a passion. 455 PHS documented GTO's don't come up often. As always Thanks Again for any help |

Per the car on eBay, it would have had a 7040268 as it was not RA. A RA auto carb would be 7040270. Ram air was an option and would show up on PHS, code 601.

The planned 1970 455 Ram Air A/T carbs 7040278 / 7040578 and M/T 7040279 / 7040579 never happened.
These engines finally recieved the 400 Ram Air 3-4 carbs A/T 7040270 / 7040570 and M/T 7040273 / 7040573. |

241 units = 455HO with RamAir Automatic
302 units = 455HO with RamAir Manual Option 601 = HD Air Inlet = RA Induction/Fresh Air , RA carburetor 270 or 273 455HO with RamAir was also a no-cost alternate to the RamAir3 400 on a 1970 Judge Only 14 units produced - all were Automatic 11 Hardtops - 3 Convertibles |

One thing note worthy about it -
Its the first Automatic 455HO I have seen with Special Order Axle (from 3.07 to 3.31) Although whoever red highlighted the breakdown sheet didn't pick up on the ratio upgrade. Have seen a couple or few Manual 455HO with the option (from 3.31 to 3.55) The seller got a little overly ambitious in his description text calling it 455HO Ram Air |

Did the 70 A-BODY 455 H.O. cars come with RA exhaust manifolds ? I have always wondered about this, but have never seen a positive answer.

I have owned an Oshawa built and fully documented 455 RA GTO since 1989. I was fortunate enough to know Fred Simmonds who assisted me with further documentation of all 70 GTO's and included with my information package is the breakdown of Oshawa cars. Total L75 with M40 Trans built was 1986 units. Of that 106 were built GM Oshawa. Total L75 with M40 and Ram Air option was 241 units. Of that 12 only were produced by GM Oshawa. I own one of those 12 cars. Fred Simmonds also told me back in around 1990 that an L75 Ram Air car could have either Ram Air III exhaust manifolds or standard exhaust manifolds. My car had the Ram Air III exhaust manifolds but I have over the years seen these cars with both versions. Perhaps it was a plant thing ? Hope this helps explain the rarity of the 455 with Ram Air. |

Is that price in line with the value? I think it has good bones and might be worthwhile if you had a suitable drive train looking for a.home. It was actually on my watch list. Not as a player just as an interesting car.

Holy crap that car has more options than a Cadillac.
Rarely rarely see collapsible spare or heated back glass on a 70 GTO. Plus it has cruise and everything else ... Color combos make it less favorable to me though. Can't have everything. Nice restoration on a Cali native. |

XXX customer order
We see that right often , but this picture isn't too clear. C89 option is the dome lamp with a spot lamp on each side. But I can't figure out their lingo except for the last LP part (lamp) Dec 18 having JT wheels must have been around the start of JL / JT wheel code switch since they hand scribbled a correction in the wheel box. |
