Best 2nd-gen F-body D-port headers?
I have a friend with a '77 T/A, 6X heads, and some nasty old 3-tube headers.
I have him interested in installing some good 4-tubes. My dilemma is that I haven't bought a set of headers for a 2nd gen F-body since the 1990's! What are the best options? Something about 1.75" primary is plenty for him. Doug's? Are Tribal Tubes available?? Thanks, Lee

Hedman 28150 is a good install as well if 4spd car.

Automatic, mild 455/6x/mild HR, pure street. This guy has owned the car since '78 and it has NEVER been to the track.

I'd just go with the RARE RM-2-OS factory headers. It's an easy fit and they work really well. If not Doug's seem to be a good way to go I know a lot of guys use them.
Good luck |

when measuring the overall 'drop' the tribal tubes were 3.5" inches shorter than my hookers IIRC I cant say how much additional ground clearance i'll gain as I don't have the tribal tubes installed yet

Lee, I have recommended and use the Hedman #28150, 1.75" x 3".
Use the composite header gaasket from Fel-pro 1423 (or maybe 1424) either one is for a D-port. They have good ground clearance and fit well, even on a lowered car like mine. Looking underneath and across the bottom of the chassis, the lower tubes hang just below the frame rails. |

X 2 on all of the above. I even put a set on the wife's 79 T/A way back from stock manifolds/pipes to headers without raising the engine. Installed from underneath. Just dropped the starter and oil filter housing and they bolted right up. |

Thanks for suggestions guys!
Good to hear that Hedman is now making a good product for these cars. I looked at a set back in the early 90's, and the flange openings weren't even shaped liked the Pontiac ports! But I recently bought some Hedmans for an LS-swap project, and they are gorgeous headers! I've got an offer on an old set of Hookers - never used. Those will be a serious consideration. Larry, thanks for sending Steve H. my way, he's a very nice guy and I enjoyed working with him. He has the 2.5" RARE's on his '79 400/4spd. S/E. Even though he only has about 8.3CR, we were able to get 314rwhp out of it! With the low CR and RARE's, I wasn't expecting it to go higher than maybe 280. I'll discuss the options/costs with the owner, thanks again.

NEVER MIND....
For the moment, the guy has decided that he is happy with how his car runs with the 3-tubes. "you can lead them to the water, but...." Thanks for the offers and the info, maybe this thread will help someone else in the near future.
