Air cleaner question
I just bought a dual quad setup off a fellow member and am curious as to what diameter air cleaners I should look for? I like the look of separate air cleaners vs one oval one. Do I need 6" or 6.5"? Also they will be mounted on carter afb 450s so for the base will I need a raised base, flat or drop?

If you know (or can figure out) the carb center to center spacing on your manifold, that dimension will be the max.diameter air cleaner(s) you can run.
As far as base style, I'm not sure what you'll be able to get away with. You'll probably have less options compared to a 14" air cleaner. Ron. |

I'm thinking I'm going to go with A 6 3/8" diameter assembly with a flat base, should work. . . Maybe.

Is it an Offy or Eddy or something else?

I see that it's an Edelbrock P-65. Center to center is 6-7/16" so Yep, 6-3/8" is as big as you can go.
Someday, I'm gonna get me one of those |

Wow, the P65 carb bases are close together. On my Offy I ended up running two 8x12 air cleaners and had about 3/8" clearance between them. Had the car on Harry K's dyno and he had me remove the air cleaners to see if we'd pick up horsepower -- lost 10 horsepower with bare carbs. According to the K&N calculator, these were right at the minimum square inches of filter area necessary for my engine size, and the dyno run backed up the calculator data.

Mick, do you happen to know if they make those air cleaners with a 2 barrel base. I might consider trying them on a 66 Tri-Power.

I just did a quick check on ebay and it looks like they all have the 5-1/8" carb bases. Here's the ebay search link: Oval Air Cleaners. I didn't even see my ball milled cleaners listed this time. I guess you could make an adapter for the base if you saw an air cleaner that looked worth converting.
Also, I immediately tossed the paper elements they came with and ordered out the correct sized K&N filters. No problem with the fit.

Another option for an aircleaner:
The Ford enthusiasts have been responsible for the reproduction of the oval aircleaner Ford used in the early 1960's. These come three ways: (A) the bottom punched for the Ford dual quads. (B) the bottom punched for the Ford 6v setups. (C) the bottom unpunched. Price for the units are very reasonable, and the filters have also been reproduced, so one has a ready supply of filters, and a unit that was engineered to flow sufficient air for a dual quad application. Just mill the FoMoCo off of the aluminum cover if placing on a Pontiac engine! And just for the record: (A) Carter never rated an AFB at 450 CFM. (B) If your Pontiac is larger than a 326, and you are unhappy with the performance of this setup, try an Offy intake, and a pair of original Pontiac AFB's (approximately 575 CFM each). Jon.
