What's this engine?
I'm putting this in the 'RACE' forum, since it was racing at ECTA's Wilmington meet this weekend. The engine was in a beautiful Chevy coupe (1940?). Anybody know anything about it?

With it being painted all black it's hard to tell, but if it is a Pontiac block in there then I would guess that the heads are KRE warp 6 babies!

Nope, not a Pontiac.
I just saw this engine, it is a BBC derivative. Can't think of the guy's name right now. (was a Pontiac engineer) Just remembered, it was John Callies. He makes/built the heads, why he calls it a Pontiac don't know. His name is cast on the side of the heads. Uses a Merlin block also I think.

There is nothing Pontiac about that engine, except for the name on the valve cover. So why call it one? http://johncalliesinc.com/test_products.php |

There was a Pontiac engineer John Callies who built a early Simca(30's?) with a real Pontiac 303(iirc) TA/ RA5 motor way back in the late 70's-early 80's that was featured in HRM... Probably same guy.
The injector spacing seems a bit off to be a RA5 head yet a bit too far to be a regular BBC head. Almost looks like big Ford spacing(557 is a common stroker kit for 460 type Ford) Agree, the valve covers are sweet! |

I think some of you racers may know more about this then I do but for a certain NHRA class of racing they came out with a BBC that was classified as a Chevy engine because it had a Pontiac part number on the cylinder heads. This was just done for some weird NHRA rule to call it a Chevy although we Pontiac people know better. Several years ago there was an all Pontiac event in Tucson Arizona and there was a guy there in a Vega with a BBC in it and it had those Pontiac heads on it. All the Pontiac guys protested and they ruled that it could compete because under NHRA rules it was a Pontiac. Anyhow in the finals I took this Vega out with my 65 LeMans and was a hero by the Pontiac guys because they would not have been happy if this Vega with a BBC in it would have one the event.

Write up says Keith Block Aluminum "Skirted" Racing Block with "one-off" Callies Cylinder heads. Basically an upgrade over a "Pontiac" DRCE engine.

Thanks everybody for the help. I sure wish I'd been at Wilmington to see that car in person.
