I can only speak for his TH400 book, but it was great. I did my first transmission using the tips and information in his book and it works great.

4L60 has design deficiencies that lead to failure in use. Either remedy those deficiencies (i dunno what they are) or upgrade to 4L80.

The 4L60E is a better unit than the early 700-4R/4L60's. The first big change to that transmission came in 1987 when the factory did about a dozen needed upgrades to the original design. The 4L60E's came out a few years later with even more upgrades.
You will need to install solid teflon sealing rings on the reverse drum and input shaft. That will be the biggest challenge. It can be done without buying the special tools needed but a LOT easier if you just take the plunge and buy them. Haven't done one in quite a while but it is a good ideal to replace the wiring harness inside the pan and even better if you buy new shift solenoids, PR switch and LU solenoid as well........

Any transmission I open up, is going to be done with the aid of a ATSG "Techtran" manual, along with whatever D-I-Y/consumer-oriented book(s) I can lay my hands on.
The ATSG manuals are not inexpensive, but they are a detailed wealth of knowledge. https://www.amazon.com/ATSG-4L60E-Tr.../dp/B00Z1RFENA |

just reading this, and I have a small question;
I have a 1991 Chev half ton; I seem to recall reading that this truck got a better transmission than earlier years. A friend confirmed RPO's a while ago (he was the manager(?) of a parts department at the time); I am seeing RPO 'MD8' Wikipedia (which does have errors) says that the 4L80E was RPO MT1 - but then it goes on to say it was installed in 1991+ GMT400 trucks. Without crawling under the truck - can anyone tell me if our truck has a 4L80E or 4L60E? EDIT: I did some more digging, it reads as though the 4L80E was only with larger engines than mine. So mine should be(?) a 4L60E.

Watch the video on YT from Performabuilt. He really likes the 4L60e even for high HP applications.

Thanks cliff for posting,just purchased your book hope it helps me.So far fwd drum failed leak test,planetary had deep groove in support shaft,sunshell had some wear.All parts are on order through Gallaxy,inwhick ide Like to give a shoot out to.No real smoking gun found for the 3-4 clutch failure.Did get some info from nickstransmission that a bad tps or maf will be the culprit. Truck had a maf code
