My in tank fuel pump conversion for EFI
Hello all,
I am in the middle of converting my EFI fuel pump to an in tank pump so I figured I would snap some pics and show how I'm doing it. I will be running the Holley HP EFI TBI system and wish to be rid of the very loud in line fuel pump I was running on my previous setup. First I'm starting out with this fuel pump module that I removed from a 91 or 92ish Dodge Caravan: I settled on this unit because it has the built in bucket/reservoir so I wont have to add a baffle to the tank and it still has metal lines, top, and conventional style lock ring setup. I wanted the metal lines and top so I could weld on it if need be and be able to bend the lines a little bit for customizing as opposed to the similar GM fuel pump modules where its all plastic. I got this at the u-pull yard for $16

I was originally planning on welding this into my present tank as it was bought new by me several years ago and is still in fine shape, but after reading several horror stories I decided it wasn't worth the risk and ordered a new GM34D Spectra tank through Amazon so I don't blow off my face in the process.

although I was a little nervous about ruining a brand new tank, I started cutting. There is no turning back now:

I had to do some bending to get a larger area for the new lock ring to drop down into. this was easier than I thought it was going to be, the metal stretched and shrunk quite easily using my body work hammer and dolly set and some pliers. here is a pic of the pump laying in the sideways orientation it will be in the tank and a shot of the newly formed opening where the lock ring will get welded.

A close up pic of a test fit of the lock ring. After some slight trimming of the ring and tank hole I began to weld it into place.

Mostly finished welding.
I still have to check for leaks and figure out if I need to coat the inside of the tank where I welded to prevent rust from forming, and if so what is the best product to use. Any one have suggestions for this?

I was going to get the Walbro 255 LPH high output pump but then I saw some similar pumps from TRE Performance. They are cheaper and supposedly they run quieter than Walbro and got some good reviews from the research I did, so I decided to give one of them a shot. They run about 85 shipped. I have a Walbro 255 in my 455 powered 85 Cutlass and it is pretty loud for an in tank.

And here is a pic of the Holley HP EFI kit I will be running. It is one of the newer systems that is self tuning and utilizes a wideband O2 sensor. I can also control an electronic advance distributor, electric fans and the temperatures they turn on among other things.
