FOR SALE 8-1/2-inch 3:23 Posi complete
Complete drum to drum 8-1/2-inch rear axle, 3:23-1 ratio, w/locking differential.
This was the back-up for my '65 GTO which I have sold. This rear axle was sourced from a 1976 Buick Regal.. The brackets have been professionally located and re- welded to install into my '65 A-Body chassis. All there, spins free, no leaks, working fine when pulled from car. Asking $650.00 Or best offer. Either Pick-Up or I can attach this to a pallet, but the rest of the shipping cost is yours. First come, first served. Last edited by unclescratch; 10-21-2019 at 05:43 PM. |

Pretty good deal being drum to drum. I’d jump on that if I had a ‘65

I would think it will install easily into other years also!

Can you suggest shipping options to get this to New York? I don't have any experience in having something like a rear shipped. Thanks

shipping options
I once shipped a complete 421 Engine to Ohio by fastening it to a pallet and building a doghouse over it. The buyer arranged the freight so all I had to do was drop the pallet off at the dock of Yellow Freight company (15 years ago). You might contact your favorite carrier in Kingman, AZ 86409 to make the same arrangements.

Correction: sourced from a 1977 Buick a-Body. Also, this measures 61-5/8-inches from drum to drum for wheel fitment.

Without he oddball altered upper control arms, will fit:
'77 to late 80's B series. '73-74 BOP A-body, '75-77 all CBOP A-body.

The ironic thing is that original gbody 8.5 like this are pretty scarce and fetch over 1k in the high power gbody scene.. they are converting all kind of rears to support horsepower as the original 7.5 simply said... dont.
Never saw a scarse gbody rear been converted to a easily available abody rear.. there might be a good story to be told.. GLWTS! |

Patox, wouldn't that be the later 78-88 G's that had the 7.5"?

what will it fit
I'm certain that whatever chassis would accept a 64-65 A-body rear axle will accept this one. Perhaps that is 1964-1967?? Certainly other forum members will know. How about it guys??? Thanks for helping us out here.

ID'ed the rear in post #10. Have several of that style 8.5 housing in my housing racks.
The '71-72 8.5 A-body rear is what I typically build off of, have several dozen, have built up over 300. '64-65 as well as some extremely early '66 model Pontiac A-body's had the narrow Pontiac 8.2 A-body rear. Aprox 54.5" measured inside backing plate to backing plate. Next wider A-body rear was hair over an inch wider, aprox 55.5" measured inside of backing plate to backing plate. These were used in many different designs up through the '72 models. With brake drums, 61 5/16" outside of drum, rim surface to rim mtg surface. '73 up style A-body as well as 77-late '80's B series, are slightly over an inch wider than the previous A-body rears; the '68-72 12 bolt, '66-72 Pontiac 8.2 10 bolts, etc. The '73-77 A-body rear also has the much wider spread on the cast upper perches. The rearend pictured above also has that spread but is NOT an '83-87 G body 8.5 rear. The G-body rear has smaller diam axle tubes, has its coil spring mounts on the top of the axle tubes, has the thick rectangular tabs welded on the ends with the large hole in the top of them for the brake line to reach the wheel cylinder, the stock G-body housings also accepts their own style of screw on backing plate. The G-body rear is also the narrowest of all above rearends.

Do they also have bolt in held axles like the original BOP 8.2?

The '73-77 8.5 A-body rears came both ways. I couldnt tell in small picture from OP's post. The easiest way to tell without pulling the drums, is look at the housing ends, c-clip version axle tubes will neck down @ the very end. C-clip axle rear of these years will use nuts & bolts to attach the backing plate. Factory bolt in axel 8.5 rears of this model will use T-bolts that one can see the head of on back of the backing plate.
For performance builds for '73-77's, I typically build off the tapered bearing bolt-in axle housing, have pulled several 3.23 8.5 factory coded rears out of '76 & 77's & all so far have been bolt-ln axle.

Looked again at the 4th picture, this time inside on the new IPad. Can barely see, but the heads on the fastener attaching the brake backing plate is T shaped, has the large rectangular head, that guide the backing plate onto the housing end.
Definitely the bolt-in axle version of the 73-77 8.5 A-body rearend.

OPH: How is this unit better than the Pontiac 8.2? Gears are a little bigger but I've never had a problem breaking a 8.2. They'll twist axles but aftermarket axles help with that.
