Question What did you drive in High School?

All of the pictures that have been popping up recently have been great and had me thinking about what some of you may have been driving back in the day.

I graduated High School in 1981 and although I had tried to buy a 69 Judge in the summer of 1980, my father wisely said no. I totaled my Mom's brand new 1980 Pontiac Phoenix in October and ended up taking her new Grand Prix to the Senior Prom.

I did however, get to spend a lot of time riding in THIS car in High School and it's a real surprise I didn't end up collecting Mopars. Owned by the older brother of one of my best friends, I got picked up each morning in this.

Triple black, Hemi 4spd 71 Cuda (this may not be the actual car, I don't remember it having billboards.)

In 1973 my best friend had a cousin that would check himself into a hospital and ask us to drive his corvette while he was away. 1969 350/350 4spd. We blew the engine up,replace it with a old 283. When he came back he traded it in for a '70 Formula 400 4sd that he let us use. We took care of that one though.

My dad and I built a 1972 Grand Prix SJ. Orange with white top. 455 with air. I was 12 when we got it, learned a lot in a rented garage in one of the coldest winters of all time, no heat and gravel floor. Dad drove it for a couple years till I turned 16. Took my driver's test in it and drove her to school every day. Not actual picture but dead nuts identical.

I bought a 327 out of a wrecked 65(?) Vette when I was 13-14. I worked that with some HP stuff and it put out about 400HP, based on the guy that assembled it for me. I found a 64 Impala SS convertible for $300 (the cost of the powerGlide rebuild, customer never came back for it). I drove that for about 9 months but always had issues with the pressed on harmonic balancer coming off. It turned out not to be reliable. My Dad helped me buy a brand new 1976 Yamaha 250 Enduro which I rode for about 30k miles over 2 years. In my Senior year I found a 1952 Chevy 1 ton Panel truck that I used until I graduated. Cool party truck.
I wish I had at least one pic of the Impala and Bike. I only have one pic of the truck.

In 1985 at age 17 I purchased a 70 GTO conv from the second owner. I drove that car for about 2 yrs and then got another car and put the GTO away. About 17 yrs ago I completed a frame off resto and I still have the car.

I graduated in 1998, and drove my 68 Firebird. I got it at 14, and had it road worthy by 16. I didn't drive it to high school much. Those duties were relegated to my buddy's Dodge Omni...

I turned 16 in 2000. My first car was a 1989 beretta I payed $700 for. My senior year I upgraded in style if not reliability to a 3rd gen IROC. I loved that car but it hated my guts, failed me at every turn.

Default Thanks For Humiliation Boss

I actually mooched rides off girlfriends a lot

finally my parents bought me a pristine, exactly like this, for $400.

Never, EVER, buy your child a station wagon or multi passenger van. EVER.

This wagon was "The Party Wagon" notorious in NE El Paso 73-74. when transportation was needed to a party, be it a commandeered parents house, in the desert, or at the levee. I was "On Call" as transport. 9 or 10 kids could be stuffed in that thing. Car died a sad death of stupid move youth action. It actually was a great car, 289. Not very cool. Thanks a lot Boss, I feel like a real bad dude now

I BEGGED for my first station wagon...a '55 Chevy BelAir...which I painted metalflake violet with gold carpet which was factory...was originally a green car. I was 15 and had already built my first car, a '56 BelAir 2-dr. hardtop...but the '55 was MUCH nicer. And you're right...don't ever buy your kids a "shaggin' wagon"...

A '55 Olds. My step dad was an "Olds" guy. I graduated high school in '63. My step dad took me car hunting. We found a '59 Olds, white with a red top and a '59 Pontiac, red with a white top. Guess which one I bought.

My first car was a 1947 Chevy truck project that I bought in 1983 when I was 14. The 400 sbc and TH400 auto were already transplanted when I bought it, but it was not yet roadworthy. I disassembled it with good intentions of a total rebuild, but it wasn't complete when I got my drivers license so I bought a daily driver. Sadly, the truck sat for several years before dad told me to finish it or get rid of it. I ended up parting it out.

My daily driver that I drove my sophomore and junior year was a really cool 1972 GMC Jimmy 4x4 that was a Waldoch type conversion with the paneling on the roof, dual sunroofs, shag carpet, loads of "mood lighting" and velour captains chairs up front and a large rear velour seat that folded flat to make a bed in the back. The rear windows were covered by those one way murals of a mountain scene that were so popular in the 70's, where you could see out, but people could not see in. The exterior was painted black with gold, brown and orange stripes painted on the sides. Total 70's type paint scheme. Originally it was equipped with a 6 cylinder and 3 on the tree shift, but I soon converted to a floor shift and a factory remanufactured 307 from a 68 Impala that I bought from the original owner in 1985. It didn't take long for my high school buddies and I to figure out that 2 cases of beer could by put on ice under the rear seat by lining the seat frame with plastic and adding a drain plug to let the water out as the ice melted. Talk about a stealth cooler! I had a blast with that vehicle and it quickly earned the nickname "The **ck truck". I drove it for almost 2 years and sold it to one of my high school buddies so I could purchase a 1979 Dodge Power Wagon from my dad.

I went through several Pontiacs during H.S. in CT (graduated in 81)…66 Ventura (caught fire and burnt to a crisp while on a date), 66 Grand Prix (collision with stone wall)…my senior year car was this Linden Green 67 Lemans. I ran it for a while with a 283 and a power glide, later replaced with the 421 and TH400 from the GP. The car didn't last long after the transplant! Right before graduation I bought this red 67 Lemans (photo from the day I purchased it…I remember because I replaced the white walls the same day). Three things I remember about this car: Mint factory interior except for the purple shag rug, E=MC2 painted on the rear quarters where the LeMans logo should have been, and 3-speed stick. Ended up bringing it to college…put a ton of miles on it...drove it back and forth to FL a couple times for spring break.
