Default Mechanical Fuel Pump Brands

Is any particular aftermarket OEM style mechanical fuel pump better than the others? I already ordered an AirTex ... heard they might be made in America, or something

For the price I'd certainly swap it for something else if it's garbage. Just a stock engine, q-jet carb. 68 GTO if it makes a difference.

Airtex has always worked good for us, but we did find that they didn't check their pump springs a few years back. The 10 PSI didn't work very well with the Tri-Power on the '66. We kept the pump but also had to hide a regulator just after the pump on the way to the carbs.

aIRTEX MAKES A GOOD PUMP, HAVE HAD GOOD LUCK WITH THEM, YOU MAY CONSIDER A LATER YEAR PUMP WITH A "VAPOR RETURN LINE" , TO ELIMINATE VAPOR LOCK, USED ON MOST a/c EQUIPPED CARS. yOU'LL HAVE TO ADD A SMALL DIAMETER RETURN LINE.

Carter.

http://www.hotrod.com/articles/hppp-...ac-fuel-pumps/

Here's one of the big can models.

https://www.amazon.com/Carter-M6122-.../dp/B000BZZ71G

The Airtex is cheaper.

https://www.amazon.com/Airtex-41382-.../dp/B000C1I15I

Don't know which is better, or if there is any quality difference, at all.

Had a RobbMc 1100hp on my last bracket car, but never got to race it. They're a bit pricey. Back in the old days, I always ran a stock mechanical, plus a Carter elec, back at the tank. Switched the elec on, just for the pass. Some recommend an elec only, to keep the gas cooler. But some don't trust an elec, unless it's inside the tank. Therefore, some run an in-tank fuel injection pump, plus a regulator.

"...Just a stock engine, q-jet carb. 68 GTO..."

One of the cheap mechanical pumps should be sufficient. The factory mechanical on my '69 RA3 GTO worked just fine, for street use.

Not much choice out there anymore for stock mechanical fuel pumps. Carter and Airtex are just about it. ACdelco has pretty much went non existent. Might come in an AC box but they no longer have an AC cast logo on the body so you can't distinguish it from an Airtex or Carter or.....

Sometimes I have excellent results from them, sometimes not so much.

I tried looking for a AC DELCO pump from my warehouse, they dont even LIST one anymore. ACDelco is just a "reboxer". Even if you find a NOS one, I dont know how its going to hold up with this trash gasoline we have now. Its a crap shoot whatever you choose, and for sure verify the fuel pressure. I would maybe choose a Carter or Delphi. I think Delphi makes their pumps?

Yep, been that way for at least 15 years that I know of. The last real AC pump I bought with the cast logo was before that.

I've been running an AC pump on my Formula for about 20 years now. So far it's been great at supplying fuel and getting the car close to the 12's. Knock on wood the ethanol in the gas hasn't affected it.

I bought another pump (Airtech I think) to replace it simply because of age, but it's running so good I had to change it and run into potential Airtech fuel pump issues, lol. So I'm holding out as long as I can.

Butler sells the Holley pump.

There are also Spectra brand pumps. Saw some at Summit & Ebay. Don't know anything about 'em.

The Airtex I bought for my Ford looks exactly like the original pump.....except shiny new, no problem keeping dual quads fed.

My 68 GTO has AC ... has/had a return line ... not sure if it's a "vapor" return line.

Were the original pumps the large can type?

Just searched through my photos, found one of a new 68 GTO in a frame shop with the front end off, looks like it has the short can. It's a non-AC car though.

The nice thing about the RobbMc pump(s) - 550 or 1100 - is you can rotate the inlets...
I have one on the GTO now.

Is there an advantage to using a large canister pump instead of a small canister when either one will fit?

We have to figure that Pontiac thought there was good reason to swap to a large canister. I can think of two possible reasons the taller canister is beneficial. First, it has a larger storage capacity and if there were minor disruptions in fuel delivery such as momentary flashes to vapor in the fuel line, the extra storage might keep you going. The other is the extra inch of gas allows more time for the vapor bubbles to purge from the fuel before going into the bottom feed line to the carb.

10psi is the reason my airtex is still on the shelf (I was afraid to run it), not many carbs would like that kind of preasure.

Makes sense. Thanks!
