Default Timing cover seal

What was the last year Pontiac used a rope seal in the front timing cover? Can the cover be machined for the later metal and rubber seal?

My mistake I thought it was rope. Can the cover be machined for later seal?

Yes, it can be modified for the later seal. There's a thread here somewhere with all the details. I'll see if I can find it if someone doesn't beat me to it first.

Contact member Bill Hanlon for details on the installation of a lip seal in place of the old cork seal.

Jack' is suggesting that you look here http://www.pontiacsafari.com/L1Garag...ealUpgrade.pdf
The alignment tool is available for a $50 deposit (cheerfully refunded when I get the tool back) + you pay the freight both ways. Your engine will be the 14th that it has been used on and no complaints yet. Don't be afraid of my references to my '57 GMC. It came from the factory with a '57 Pontiac 347 V8.

Send the $50 check and your mailing address to:

This is the first 1962 or earlier Pontiac engine I have had apart. From the above link I gather there are no alignment sleeves like the later engines. If I can find a machine shop to bore the cover at a reasonable price and decide to do the job I will contact Bill and take him up on his generous offer. Thanks to everyone.

Dan:

The alignment tool came home today. I'll get a check for your $50 - $11.95 shipping that I paid into tomorrow's mail.

I hope all went well.

Thanks for replacing the shipping box. It had been used for the last 5 or so "customers" and was getting a bit ratty.
