Default Cutting down a victor..

Has anyone ever experimented with cutting down the carb flange on a victor to get a little clearance under a flat hood, and if so, did it affect the performance any? Note, my stuff is all low rpm, so it doesn’t move a ton of air. Heads are 340@.600 1st gen eheads

I should also note, I would just buy a northwind, but these old heads have been cut on a bunch and a out of the box intake won’t fit up quite right, so this matched victor is probably the ticket.

I want to think Butler did. Not sure if Steve Coombs is running one he had cut down locally.

Steve C. knows the answer to your question. He has posted the information several times on this site. See if you can find it or send him a PM..

On the Year One Bandit Trans Am project with a 535 combo Jim Butler used a Victor intake with the carb flange milled down 0.650" to help it fit under the hood. With the cut down intake he used a WFO drop base unit for the TA Shaker scoop. Tested on the engine dyno at peak power rpm it gave up about 15 hp by milling the intake.

On my current 505 street engine prior to the fuel injection I did the same thing with a Victor intake & HP950 carb. On the dyno I lost about 8-10 hp at peak power rpm after milling the intake flange 0.650". Not a race deal so for me I did not miss the 8-10 hp.

I did one few years back on a boosted wide-port engine... I'll see if I can dig up pictures. I think it was in the 0.5-0.75 range

If as you say "your stuff does not move a ton of air" then why do you not run a somewhat reworked TQII or the like?

The Victor in stock form likes a added 1" spacer due to the angle of approach the runners make at the Plenum.

I would really be looking into selling that and getting a different single plane with a lower overall height then chopping it down.

I apologize for the duplicate thread, I should have searched the board a little harder. tried to put my T2 on it, that’s how I found out it won’t seal up, so I didn’t spend the $ to fit it because They wanted the heads off the motor too, and then into another set of cosmetics... ect, so I just used the victor that came with the heads. I can get it under the flat fiberglass hood, but the very front of the air cleaner rubs, so I glued foam to the front of the lid to act as a buffer and it has worked ok for 2 years. It will not clear the bracing on the steel hood. I was running a basically stock 400 shortblock with a 255/258 solid cam. With the stock crank and rods I kept the high side at 5800.. I had a balancer break and just found out it bent my N crank. Not sure what route I’m going now.

Cometic Head gaskets can be reuseable , why do you have to buy another set ? Take the heads off and match it all up with intake and reuse them .

A little weld on the port tops and mill for flatness on the T2 and it can seal. I have two that seal; 2.350 ports.

A T2 out of the box only flows some 260 cfm and kicking the runner height up from the flange on in to at least R4 height is needed to yank 280 cfm thru it.
Normal Plenum mods from that point on should get you 300 cfm.

This Intake also just loves a 1" spacer blended into the top of the runners with a nice fat radius.

Both my 455s, one with an HFT and one with a solid roller and a 1/4to 1/2" wedge spacer to level the Shaker based on MPH is making 550-575HP with the T2. The runners did get massaged way up to blend then better to the turns. Both have/had 320 cfm heads.
