Homecoming 66 GTO
This young lady is going in style!
You would think someone would have put the hubcap back on for this special event.

Just a tad too skinny for me. I love his white socks with the suit.

That looks to be a white stripe tire. What would the basic wheels be on a new GTO? Did most come with the Rally1 option, or was that something that had to be checked off on a order form by someone ordering a new car? It seems like most cars back then were ordered as oppose to today taking what is on a lot or having the deals find you one at another dealership. I just bought a new Buick Enclave and the dealer found one at another dealership instead of sitting down and special ordering it.

Looks like a red line tire to me (compare the color of the stripe to his socks).
Rally I's would have to be selected as an option by who ever ordered the car (dealer or customer). Base wheel is an unstyled steel wheel. K

Maybe the Boys were headed off to the Drag Strip (no hubcaps) after this event.

I wonder if he might have had a flat and that is the spare on the car? If the car came with Rally 1s the spare would have been a steel wheel without a hubcap. Looks like a couple new lug nuts on it.

The spare would have been a Rally I wheel also.

are those a few rally one lug nuts holding that wheel on?

I don't think so, Rally I lugnuts were acorn capped chrome. You can see the studs, or the black/red centers of the Rally II type nuts. I like the idea of the spare tire being installed, though. Had a flat on the way to the event, etc...

Oh....just saw Chris' post. Good point, and I learned something today (besides what NOS '66 resonators look like!)

Actually Rally I's were fairly rare back in the day. I didn't even know what one was until the early 70's! The vast majority of 60's muscle cars, especially 64-6 models, came with steel wheels and hubcaps. And the very first thing you did was put on a set of aftermarket mag type wheels. Or if you didn't have the money saved up yet, at least you pulled the ugly hubcaps and ran with plain black wheels. Maybe that was what the guy in the posted pic was doing.

When I was a kid in the mid '60's (and an avid car nut) I can remember seeing a lot of chrome reverse/baby moon combos on a lot of cars, and mag type wheels to a lesser extent, but I too don't have a 'Rally I' memory until the '70's. I remember a lot of folks would simply swap on a different wheel cover/hupcap for a different look. There was an old man in the town I lived in (I swear he looked like Henry Ford!) who drove a mint '40 Ford coupe, a standard model, jet black, with '56 Plymouth pie tin/cone shaped wheel covers. I admired the dual chrome exhaust tips and the burble of that engine so much, my dad put a second 'exhaust' pipe on my pedal car.

I dont think Ive seen anyone mention this but take a close look at the lug nuts. Either two of them are missing or there are only two on there. If thats the case this is a spare tire.

No, it has five lug nuts. You can expand the pic and see them clearly. 3 are standard lug nuts and two are shiny.

That was my point. If the lugs dont natch, I think it was a spare. JMO.

Well, somebody has to locate Miss Mary Verble, and ask her what the deal was with the tire on the way to the event. And no nasty 'skinny legs' comments if we want to get at the heart of this matter!!!
