Default 72 Ventura Washer Pump

Does anyone know how the windshield washer pump is supposed to work? Everytime I put the wipers on the washer pump is pumping fluid. I removed the unit and have been staring at it for a whole day trying to figure it out. I think the plunger is suposed to lock in the up position but I don't see how. Any info would be a help at this point.

On my 74, you push the switch in to activate the washer , maybe the spring inside the switch isn't pushing the knob back out , switch itself could be bad (melted on the back) if that isn't the problem. That's my guess !

To finish off the thread, Revisited the problem the other day and I figured it out. The rod that rides on the star wheel was severely warn. Wouldn't lift the pump plunger enough to lock it in the up position so it will stop pumping till the next time u hit the button.
