Rare options are great, unless you're missing parts!
Hopefully someone can help me out here. My car was originally equipped with the space saver spare option. The car has all the original trunk mounted brackets, but was missing the spare, inflator, and holddown stud when I bought it. I recently purchased a space saver spare off e-bay, my problem is that the tire does not fit under the horizontal surface of the rear quarter. It seems too far away from the tiedown bolt bracket (over 18") to place the tire on the inside of the trunk lid brace. Does anyone have a photo of space saver wheel installed on a 68 or 69 GTO? The resto guide photo is formatted in an "exploded assembly" view so you really can't see where the wheel sits when it's mounted.

not 100% w GTO but
my buddies 67 firebird has the original SS Spare and it lays down flat , your pics show yours is "standing up" , does this make sense/work?
cool option to have. Best of luck to you- you always liked puzzles as a kid didn't you? :-)

Like you i have a tire but it fitting standing up i dont think so ( 90deg) too tall
I think you will find the tire does not stand upright but at a angle ( 60 deg) . If the tire was to sit over the lip at the bottom( in the rear guard ) and angle out at the top. Thats the only way i can see it fitting. Can not wait to see how they really do fit. Look at the GP set up they sit down low inside the trunk ( boot ) lucky buggers Craig |

My guess is that my space saver spare is too big for this application. It is a BFG G78-14 space saver spare. I bought this one assuming it would be the same size in the uninflated state as the correct KC coded space saver wheel. I didn't want to pony up the $400+ for a correct wheel. Does anyone have a KC coded wheel/tire that they can measure the tire OD and width so I can confirm that is my problem?

I agree with R68GTO, I looked up an "Car Life" issue I have that had a test of a 69 Lemans with that option, it clearly is dead vertical but looks smaller than your tire.

By the way, I have always wondered if with that option the trunk mat would be full length? and if the regular spare tire tie down bracket was present
