Hey

I got a 1978 and a 1979 Trans Am. The problem am having is on the '78, i put the car in to get an MoT(UK) and they found that when the rear end was jacked up and they pulled on the wheel there was a linear movement on the axle shaft, so you could pull it out and push it in slightly. They though it was the bearings so i replaced them myself(Not the easiest job). But its still doing the same thing! I replaced the c-locks that hold the axle shaft in place cause they were a little worn, but still no dice!
So finally i checked the axle on the '79 and it does the same! It moves the exact same amount! So are both axles at fault or do all Trans Ams axles do this? And could I get away with telling the MoT man this? They are both Limted Slip Diffs.

Cheers for any help!

Stu

What's Mot? Mot the hoople?

Hate to say this but you just spent a bunch of money for nothing.

All General Motors axles that use a C-clip to retain the axles will do this, it's normal.

My 78 had so much free play when stock you could head a rubbing when in a hard turn. Two dealers couldn't figure it out, relaced sway bar, rebuilt post. I found it when I replaced brakes hoes. The brake drum would move in enough to slightly rub on the backong plate. Same deal too much free playu no big deal as long as C clips in good shape.

Cheers for that, thats what i wanted to hear!

In Britain every car has to have an MoT test every year from approved garages to checked that the car is safe to be driven on the roads, and when a car passes you get a certificate which allows you to get the car insured and road taxed. These test are quiet strict. My trans am failed on many things such as blown light bulbs, insecure liecnce plate, axle shaft movment, leaking shock absorber and steering pump, corrosion to the rear crossmember and leak headers, surprisingly it did pass the emissions test!

Thanks again for your help!

Cheers

Stu
