Default The NEXT Topic & Another Mini Contest

Few changes from the previous contest. Please read the rules carefully. This time you get two life lines meaning TWO Guesses. Post your guess in this thread ONLY.

First prize is a Hurst licensed embroidered baseball style cap says Hurst Equipped.

Second prize is two decals: One is the GRRR-RRR and the other is a neat one for the drivers side exterior mirror that is done in frost white that Says Objects in Mirror are losing. Type font style kind of duplicates what is on your passenger outside rearview mirror.

That is the prizes. Again TWO GUESSES

The topic for this thread is:

What car did you own in your youth or a friend own that was either ugly, weird, or unusual. Must be a non Pontiac example!

As for the contest here are the clues on my example. I ran a towing business for over 20 years. Besides buying muscle cars namely GTOS back in the day (1970s-1980s) I would buy other cars that were mint examples including a 1964 Sunbeam Alpine, a 1963 Willys pick up truck just to name two.

The unusual one that my friends thought I was crazy for buying was I believe a 1961 or 1962. I think I gave $700 for it. Garage kept. It was foreign made. It was a convertible. Good color black body red convertible top, red interior. It had an automatic transmission that was not a typical fluid driven transmission. The little old lady that owned it could not find a repair shop to fix the transmission. I bought this car.

NAME THE CAR No need to name the model give me the name of the car based on the clues above. One of the clues given is a critical clue to the puzzle.

By the way I ended up putting the car in Hemmings and the $700 car brought me two grand a museum bought it so it didn't have to move under its own power.

So you can tell your story in this thread...

and Take your two guesses on this contest

good luck players....

The ugliest car I know belonged to a guy I worked with at a summer job. In the early 70s, my father lined up a construction job with one of his friends. I was 15 at the time, with no driver's license. The boss arranged for one of his employees to pick me up and drop me off after work.

The employee's car was a white 1961 Plymouth Valiant, 4-dr with the spare tire embossed on the trunk lid. The owner had shoulder length hair, and liked to party hard.

I knew something was up when my mom was looking out the window one Monday AM, and sprayed whatever she was drinking all over the place. I walked over to see what she was looking at, and it was hilarious. This guy had painted one side of his white car black, right down the center of the car.

I went out for a better look, and the guy was laughing. I asked what happened, and he mumbled something about getting blasted and making a statement about racism. The longer version of the story revolved around wine, a bong, and several gallons of paint they found in his father's garage.

As for the car, I'm going to guess it's a BMW 700 convertible. I remember that BMW offered a semi-automatic in the early 1960s. One of the guys my dad knew liked to bring odd-ball cars over for him to work on. He liked Porsche's, BMWs, Jaguars, and Mercedes.

Isetta.

A guy in high school had a 64 Belvidere, 4 door sedan, ugly brown color. Had plumbing pipe for exhaust, and a sign on the front bumper that said LADIES, stolen from a restroom door.....

Another guy had a white NSU Prinz. Had racing decals on the rear windows, white lettered tires, etc. All with a 2 cylinder air cooled engine.

Volkswagen

My first car was a 1970 Austin America. Belonged to my grandparents. It was automatic but you could shift it manually, too. Only took me 5-6 weeks to destroy the transmission and no repair shop would touch it. So I became the proud owner of a bright orange Plymouth Arrow

Update on the above posts....no correct answers as of yet...

On a side note the BMW 700 my friend who has the 507 that was inthe other contest I found for him one of those little 700 cars....they are quite rare and neat looking actually.. He also would buy the BMW 503 models which I think where the forrunner of the 507. the 503 model was a sedan from around 1955 or so. Again going by memory.

I remember those Valients....a lot of those chryslers back inthe day had that push button automatic and if I am not mistaken one year or maybe another brand had the controls in the steering wheel?

One of my high paying jobs as a teenager in high school pumping gas my boss had a Valient he had dropped a Chevy V8 in....neat little sleeper car...

Any kind of luck I can stretch this contest over a weeks time...

The NSU is a very rare car today. I vaguely remember them. Back in the early 1960s and 1970s not many foreign cars were yet on the road like you see in the last 20 plus years.

They probably almost gave away franchises back then to car dealers to carry their models! Reason I say that is one of the oldest Porsche dealerships in the country is near me and I they got that franchise I believe in the early 1950s at a bargain.

Vauxhall Victor?

My ugly car was a 74 4-door Maverick. Baby puke orangish-tan with a white vinyl top.

Dennis:

Your car sounds like a King Midget or Crosley, although they're not foreign made.

My guess is a Nash Metropolitan.

One of the weirder cars I've owned in the past was a '67 Opel Kadette wagon. The same model that Car and Driver called the worst car of all time. Mine was so rusty the driver's door would fall off if I opened it so I had to crawl out the passenger side; in cold weather the passenger door would freeze shut and then I'd have to go out the rear tailgate.

My guess on your convertible with the odd transmission is a Daf. They had a belt driven continuously variable transmission much like a snowmobile.

Kirban again checking in.....

Still NO WINNERS....good guesses though....few thoughts on some of the above comments...

Opel Kadett station wagon....I had one brand new 1964-65 long story on how it came about.
Car would never start in the rain my Mom would push it with their T-Bird so it would jump start. Sold actually by Buick dealers....the GT coupe has a following today some say looks like a baby Corvette.

I got my Opel Kadett as a kind of punishment having a brand new 631/2 Ford XL model prior to that I did not take care of. I ended up running away from home in the Ford in the fall of 1963 before being picked up by the New Mexico state police. Spent 3 days in a prison cell in Gallup New Mexico which is along the famous route 66 back in 1963. This was during the school year which met zeros for each class I missed. Needless to say the next car was the Opel Kadett wagon red in color....I probably even have a photo of it somewhere.

I was not a model son growing up however, made things easier for my younger 3 sisters and younger brother since I laid the ground work for problems!

denniskirban@yahoo.com

So the contest continues with no rite answer as of yet.

It would appear your brother in law had quite an attachment to the car keeping it for 30 years!
Some of those models are pretty sharp looking.

I didn't know him, but a guy at my college had a beaten-up late 70's Datsun he had brush painted with yellow house paint. The best part was he had cut out the roof and installed a plywood sunroof. Dude would literally flip the plywood back on its hinges to open the roof and drive around like that.

Still no winner.....not being an expert on Saabs I have had good experiences having bought and sold two of them the older body style turbo ones manual shifts....one was nothing short of incredible. I went to look at a BMW this guy had he shows me this Saab Turbo black with tan gut has 150,000 miles on it. Car was show quality. (I know nice cars). It stil had attached to the drivers seat the small leather tag saying what kind of leather the seats where. Turns out it was a one owner car that belonged to a guy who owned a company and he was able to park it inside at work every day and in a garage at nite.

I bought the car knowing nothing about Saabs...I advertised it to my turbo Buick members...car is goofy has ignition switch on the console center floor area...weird...I get a guy calls me says his buddy gave him my info says he is such and such a SAAB expert and was interested but first was sending one of those companies that run a 150 point check on a car.

Week or so later this guy shows up and spends about 2 hours looking over every thing on the car...he tells me he is not supposed to discuss his findings with the seller but he tells me he can't believe how nice this car is the only thing he could find wrong with it was the cassette deck did not function.

needless to say I sold the SAAB......

true story....

Appearantly their is "good" in every car model.....I must have found a "good" one....

Second one I sold I actually sold it to a new car dealer as they had a customer wanting a certain older model. Trust me its not easy to sell a car outrite to used to a car dealer and make $$$$..

Again it was an old two door turbo model.

denniskirban@yahoo.com

Got a neighbor selling one rite now convertible car is like mint except for drivers seat was daughters car....has 140,000 on it... everything works body and paint is excellent. Has heated seats...not a great color trying to get $3900 for it...tempted but its automatic...
