74 T/A header options...
Hi Fellas:
It is my understanding that D port headers won't fit on a 6x round port head. What economical options would you recommend for someone going completely broke getting their "new" trans am on the road. Thanks! |

All versions of the 6X head are D-port.
Round port heads are quite rare. They only came on special Ram Air, High Output or Super Duty engines from 1968 - 1974. Probably 99.999% of all Pontiac heads are D-port. Thread showing the differences between round and D-port heads: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=636309 Finding headers for your car should be easy, they’re available from several different manufacturers. With that said most will be dragging the ground and become a headache, some Ram Air exhaust manifolds might be a better option if you’re not building an all out race engine.

At one time, H-O Specialties made a slick set of headers for Firebirds that worked well. They offered far better ground clearance than any other header manufactured at the time.

Once in a blue moon you’ll see those H-O Racing Tri-Y D-port headers come up for sale somewhere. They haven’t been produced for a few decades I’m thinking.

Thanks guys.
I purchased a used 6x head and it is being shipped here. Hoping they are D port as that would save me some grief. |

yes all 6x heads are D port....
the best value to quality headers for 2nd gens cars are the hedman 28150. they fit very good & work with a manual trans & are priced decent compared to most other brands. ive had a set on a 78 with a 4 speed for going on 12 years now & still use the supplied fiber gaskets with zero leaks. they have very good ground clearance too. |

I have hookers on my '74. First you want to do with any 3 bolt flange header is cut off those flanges. Weld on a set of two bolt gasketless flanges. So now there is no flange to hit the floorboard on the driverside or scrape the ground on the pass side! https://www.summitracing.com/parts/flo-15925 this is what I used!

another benefit of the hedmans, they have that ball/socket connector & the flanges rotate freely for clearance.
