Default Timing cover crank seal issue

I have put quite a few of these in through the years and I’ve never had this issue. I’m on my third one and I’m hesitant to even try it.
1st one I coated with silicone. 2nd one motor oil.
Every time the rubber seal seems to come off and get pressed out if that makes any sense . This picture shows some of it coming out because I had already cut off some of the rubber which had come out.
I found a thread where someone described the new fel pro's having a rubber coating and another brand did not and I can’t find that thread now . I’m about to try the third one with grease on it and I mean heavy grease but at 24 bucks a pop I’m getting tired of this already.

Instead of blaming the seal, what about the timing cover? What brand? Have you personally ever had a seal in it that worked correctly?

I have 6 of those types of seals never thought about it before but i remember the rubber being alot thinner like a heavy paint vrs a thicker rubber like you have

its a hammer in tight fit i can see how weak rubber will shave off

does your cover have a good lead in chamfer?

is that a national seal?

formulas yes its the same seal as you have. same number on it also. I did take a file and chamfered the edge but just wrecked the 3rd seal. coated everything in grease. the rubber is real thick. 2 seal kits from summit and one from my local auto value. looking online for a good old fashioned steel sleeve seal. which was what the original i took out was. it didn't leak but may as well change it, its in the kit....

Not trying to waste your money but Tin Indian Performance sells a super high quality viton seal for the front. It installs easily and is simply a far superior product to all the others out there. I have had hit or miss luck with newer Fel-pro, Federal Mogul, National, SKF, Mahle. Tin Indian Performance front seal, I have used 8 of them, 100% success. Seal is $13.00 BTW

+2 on the Tin Indian seals. I went through a similar issue, mine kept seeping around the crank shaft. Tin Indian was the only one that fit correctly.

Little extra precaution. I would lightly de-burr the leading edge in the timing cover if it has a sharp edge. Not sure how your cover looks there. Dremel tool and cartridge roll to soften that edge may help some.

Late to the party, but the coating on that seal is like a solution in search of a problem. The coating would seem at best to "bunch-up" under compression and if applied too thick, just shear off as yours did. The old-style steel shell seals had better tolerances and a light coat of RTV served as both a lubricant and a sealant when installing.

You can get a regular steel shell seal at your local Autozone in Duralast or National Crankshaft brands.

That seals OD coating is likely to dry out and cause a issue before the actual crank seal lip does..

Get a good seal with a metal OD and just put it in with some gray form-A- gasket and then sleep well.
